Motor Trend picks Hyundai Genesis Coupe over Chevy Camaro

Genesis Coupe against CamaroMotor Trend received great attention when it ranked the Hyundai Veracruz above a Lexus RX350 in a comparison test. This time, the publication, whose parent company has recently filed for Chapter 11, has pitted the rear-wheel drive Hyundai Genesis Coupe against America's reborn pony car icon, the Chevrolet Camaro. Both test models were V6-powered and retail a hair under or over $30K. After strenuous testing both on road and on track, the editors at Motor Trend ultimately gave the nod to the Hyundai.

To the folks at Motor Trend, prepare yourselves for a blowing hit by expectedly irate GM aficionados. We've been a bit taken aback ourselves (with a sly smirk, of course).

Hyundai is 2nd largest car maker in Singapore

A stronger yen - and to some extent a weaker won - have helped Hyundai to overtake the Japanese competition and zoom up the local sales chart to the No 2 position. After the first three months of 2009, the Korean marque is the second most popular brand here behind perennial leader Toyota.

Among members of the Motor Traders Association of Singapore (MTA), Hyundai ended 2008 in fifth place. It has now returned to a position it enjoyed a few years back - in 2005 it was Singapore's No 3 brand, and in 2004, the No 2 make.

The big improvement in ranking is especially striking, because the local passenger car market will shrink at least 24.2 per cent this year. The maximum number of cars that can be registered in 2009 is 73,830. In 2008, 97,348 cars were registered, of which MTA members sold a collective 70,809.

The Kia Soul has passed an important mark this morning, and defying the current economic doom and gloom, selling 5000 units worldwide since its January release. It’s an incredible achievement for Kia, and one that has indeed proved exciting for the Korean manufacturer who said sales are 13 per cent higher than they predicted.

Already a multi-award winner, the Soul was the first Korean car ever to receive Germany’s prestigious recognition of a design award from the world renowned Red Dot product design competition. In the UK, Fast Car magazine named Soul the ‘Best New Model for 2009'.

New York: 2010 Kia Forte KOUP

Kia Forte KOUPKia Motors America has unveiled the long-anticipated 2-door variant of the Forte at the New York International Auto Show today. Recalling the KOUP Concept that made its debut last year, the Forte KOUP is another striking design by the Korean automaker. Up front, the Koup receives a more aggressive design, featuring a bespoke front end with a larger lower intake and more vertical side intakes. At the rear are wider and thinner taillights with a larger rear fascia and dual exhaust tips.

Available in two trim levels, the Forte Koup EX is powered by a 2.0-liter DOHC four-cylinder engine, producing 156 horsepower and 144 pound-feet of torque that features Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT) and multi-port electronic fuel injection. The SX features an upgraded 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder engine, also with CVVT, which delivers 173 horsepower and 168 pound-feet of torque. EX models are mated to a five-speed manual transmission or an optional four-speed automatic. SX models feature a standard six-speed manual or an optional five-speed automatic.

Inside the Forte Koup features standard sport seats, power windows, power door locks, remote keyless entry and cruise control, and a leather package is an option on both models. Other standard features include voice-activated Bluetooth, a 6-speaker AM/FM/CD/MP3 audio system with SIRIUS, and USB/AUX inputs. Standard safety features include six airbags, four-wheel disc brakes with an anti-lock brake system (ABS), electronic stability control (ESC) and a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS).

The Forte Koup is scheduled to hit showrooms this summer.

PRESS RELEASE:

NEW YORK, April 9, 2009 – With performance-inspired, aggressive and sleek styling, Kia Motors America (KMA) today globally debuted the 2010 Forte Koup production vehicle during a press conference at the 2009 New York International Auto Show (NYIAS). Joining the Forte family in the KMA lineup, the company's first-ever two-door coupe embodies the brand's current bold design direction first seen on the concept version of the Soul urban passenger vehicle in 2006.

"On the heel of the introductions of the Soul and Forte sedan, Forte Koup represents the next exciting step in the transformation of Kia design and offers a blend of sporty and emotional appeal," said Michael Sprague, vice president, marketing, KMA. "We believe our new design evolution coupled with standard Kia value and safety features will continue to attract customers to the Kia brand."

Curb Appeal

Based on the design styling of the KOUP concept vehicle shown during last year's show, Forte Koup's fluid lines and balanced proportions, meant to evoke an emotional driving experience, closely mirror the powerful design cues of the concept vehicle and offer the same aggressive stance with swept-back wrap-around headlamps, aggressive air intakes and a low, sleek profile. Available in two trim levels (EX and SX), Forte Koup offers a muscular yet sophisticated design. Even from behind, Forte Koup exudes attitude with slim, wrapped tail lights, duel exhaust outlets and a rear diffuser.

Athleticism and convenience are standard for the Forte Koup EX with body-color bumpers, power heated outside mirrors with integrated turn signals and 16-inch alloy wheels outfitted with P205/55R16 tires. The SX trim offers an even sportier profile with 17-inch alloy wheels paired with P215/45R17-sized premium tires.

Smooth and Sporty Ride

With a wheelbase of 104.3 inches, an overall length of 176.4 inches, an overall width of 69.5 inches and overall height of 55.1 inches, Forte Koup is slightly shorter in length and height than the Forte sedan, but still boasts comfortable seating for up to five passengers. Koup's lowered stance provides better aerodynamics for those looking for a more exciting ride.

The Kia-engineered body achieves high torsional stiffness giving Forte Koup better handling, smoother ride quality and greater refinement than its competitors, with a specially tuned suspension developed to optimize responsive handling on curvy roads. Additional refinements are fitted throughout to help ensure a comfortable ride with good noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) reduction qualities.

Built on a front-wheel-drive unibody frame, Forte Koup utilizes the same platform as the sedan, with an independent front suspension with MacPherson struts and stabilizer bar and a torsion beam rear suspension with struts and coil springs. This combination helps provide the optimal balance of handling and comfort. An engine-speed-sensitive, power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering system adds the finishing touch for precise handling to help provide the most advantageous amount of assist for varying road conditions. The SX trim also comes with a sport-tuned suspension providing for a firmer ride with reduced body roll and improved handling.

Lively Performance

More powerful than the Honda Civic Coupe, Ford Focus Coupe or Chevrolet Cobalt Coupe, Forte Koup EX is driven by a 2.0-liter DOHC four-cylinder engine, producing 156 horsepower and 144 pound-feet of torque that features Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT) and multi-port electronic fuel injection, both of which provide for greater performance and fuel economy. The SX features an upgraded 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder engine, also with CVVT, which delivers 173 horsepower and 168 pound-feet of torque, more than the Scion tC. Expanding upon the dynamic look and feel, Forte Koup's engine hums powerfully courtesy of the dual exhaust outlets outfitted on both EX and SX trims.

Like the Forte sedan, two transmission options are available for both 2010 Forte Koup models: a standard five-speed manual transmission or an optional electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission (EX models). The SX model features a standard six-speed manual transmission and an optional five-speed automatic transmission with Sportmatic®.

Forte Koup fuel economy is not sacrificed for sportiness, as both engines deliver at least 31 miles per gallon (highway). The 2.0-liter engine offers 25/34 mpg (city/highway) when mated with either the five-speed manual transmission or the optional four-speed automatic. Those opting for the more powerful 2.4-liter engine also can expect an economical 22/32 mpg with the six-speed manual and 23/31 when paired with the five-speed automatic transmission.

Striking Interior

With a surprisingly spacious interior for a two-door coupe, Forte Koup provides a comfortable 90.7 cubic feet of interior volume, larger than the 2009 Honda Civic Coupe, Scion tC or Chevrolet Cobalt Coupe. Driver and passengers have an impressive 38.7 inches of headroom and 43.6 inches of legroom in the front seats and 35.3 inches of headroom and 33.9 inches of legroom in the rear seats. Trips to the beach and weekend getaways will be a breeze with ample cargo space of 12.6 cubic feet, enough to accommodate luggage and belongings of all passengers.

Forte Koup continues the luxury treatment with a host of standard interior features, beginning with supportive, nicely appointed sport seats outfitted with more aggressive bolsters on the seat cushion and seat back for optimal comfort. Air conditioning, a driver's seat height adjuster, adjustable rear seat headrests, tilt steering column, rear defroster, center console with dual cup holders, map lamps and variable intermittent wipers are also just some of the myriad amenities standard on every vehicle. Also standard on all models are power windows, power door locks with remote keyless entry and cruise control with steering wheel-mounted controls for added convenience.

Progressing to the SX trim offers additional standard touches such as: unique sport cloth seats with vibrant red stitching, a tilt and telescoping steering column, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, metal pedals and metal finish trim and a Supervision™ gauge cluster with trip computer further enhancing its energetic personality. Both EX and SX trims also offer an optional power moonroof.

An optional Leather Package is available for both EX and SX trims. When combined with the EX trim the Leather Package adds leather seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob and heated seats. When paired with the SX trim it includes leather and heated seats in addition to the standard leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob.

Superior Sound

For inside entertainment while cruising down the road, Forte Koup comes with a standard six-speaker AM/FM/CD/MP3 audio system outfitted with SIRIUS Satellite Radio capabilities with three months complimentary service¹. For added listening convenience steering wheel-mounted audio controls also come standard on all models, as well as USB and auxiliary input jacks in the center console with full iPod® and MP3 controllability via the audio head unit. Standard Bluetooth® connectivity enables hands-free operation for compatible cell phones.

Standard Kia Motors Safety

Forte Koup offers a class-leading level of standard safety equipment, with features such as dual front advanced airbags, front seat-mounted and side curtain airbags, four-wheel disc brakes with an antilock brake system (ABS), electronic stability control (ESC) and a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS).

Industry-Leading Warranty

Like all Kia models, Forte Koup is covered by a comprehensive warranty program, which offers unprecedented consumer protection. Included in this program are a 10-year or 100,000-mile limited powertrain warranty, a five-year or 60,000-mile limited basic warranty, and a five-year or 100,000-mile anti-perforation warranty. A five-year/60,000-mile roadside assistance plan is also part of the comprehensive coverage program.

Hyundai to discontinue Entourage later this year in U.S.

Hyundai EntourageHyundai has announced it will stop selling the Entourage minivan later this year in America. Hyundai Motor America CEO John Krafcik stated that the Entourage was a “cheap lesson in why you don’t do badge engineering.”

Differing only by a unique front fascia and other minor details from the Kia Sedona, the Entourage was a dismal addition to the line-up. Last year, Hyundai sold a whopping 8,400 units of the minivan, down 50% from the previous year. Kia sold 27,000, down about 30%.

There has been no reports of the Entourage's fate in Canada.

Hyundai EquusHyundai Motor America has a press conference scheduled for tomorrow at the New York International Auto Show, with the Nuvis Concept expected to be its highlight (crosses fingers for the YF Sonata). However, the unannounced arrival of the automaker's new Equus flagship sedan in the Big Apple has already raised a few eyebrows. Hyundai hires a new chief designer

Hyundai Genesis CoupeHyundai Motor America has hired former General Motors designer Philip Zak to head up its North American design team in Irvine, California. The Korean automaker’s Hyundai Design Center has been without a chief designer since the departure of Joel Piaskowksi, who later joined Mercedes-Benz’s Advance Design center in California.

Zak’s portfolio includes models such as the last-generation Oldsmobile Bravada, Chevrolet Equinox, Pontiac G6 and Chevrolet Cobalt. He recently took up a posting as GM of Europe’s top stylist, where he oversaw Opel, Vauxhall and Saab.

Zak had spent 20 years at GM’s various operations and he will have big shoes to fill as he replaces the man who was partially responsible for Hyundai’s critically-acclaimed Genesis Coupe.

Hyundai to roll out plug-in hybrid for 2012 in America

Hyundai will launch its first plug-in hybrid in the United States in late 2012. The vehicle will be based on the four-door Blue-Will sports car concept on display now at the Seoul auto show, according to Yang Woong-chul, president of Hyundai-Kia Motors’ R&D division. Yang said Hyundai’s plug-in will target the upcoming Chevrolet Volt and Toyota Prius plug-ins.

The Blue-Will sits on a 106-inch wheelbase. It is powered by a 1.6-liter gasoline direct-injection engine teamed with a 100-kilowatt electric motor. Hyundai has developed its own lithium-ion battery.

“Almost every part on this car has been developed in-house,” Yang said. “That will make it possible to make this vehicle affordable.”

Yang said the Blue-Will can travel about 38 miles on electricity only. Hyundai claims a fuel economy rating of 106 mpg in plug-in mode and up to 55 mpg in hybrid-electric mode. The concept car features a panoramic glass roof with solar cells for recharging. Yang would not estimate the price. He also said the technology is not expected to appear on a Kia vehicle.

Seoul: 2010 Kia Sorento

Kia took the wraps off its second generation Sorento today at the opening of the 2009 Seoul Motor Show in Korea (April 3 - 12). Partially inspired from the KND-4 concept, the new Sorento is bigger than the model it replaces with seating for up to seven occupants but also less capable off road as the Korean automaker ditched the body-on-frame structure and designed an all-new unitary (monocoque) bodyshell - hence the CUV (Crossover Utility Vehicle) moniker.

"The dynamic design of new Sorento adopts simple, linear lines to create a powerful, yet polished appearance. Sporty and striking, the new Sorento represents a new breed of vehicle," commented Kia's chief designer, Peter Schreyer.

Longer and lower, the new Sorento measures 4.7 meters or 185-in. in length and can accommodate seven passengers in three rows of seats. Kia claims that interior headroom is increased by 64 mm (to 906 mm) and legroom by 102 mm (to 795 mm) while luggage space has been increased by 15 percent (258lt behind the 3rd row and 1,047 behind the 2nd row), thanks to moving the tailgate back by almost 70 mm.

NOTE: More images will be uploaded soon.

Depending on the model and the market, the new Sorento will be equipped with keyless entry, engine start button, reversing safety camera, built-in sat-nav and panoramic glass sunroof and a six, eight or 10-speaker audio system, with MP3 and iPod connectivity.

Kia's all-new Sorento will be offered with up to four different engines. In Korea, buyers will able to choose between three engines, including a 2.7-litre V6 unit running on LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) that delivers 165HP and 244 Nm of torque, a four-cylinder 2.4-litre Theta II petrol engine with 175HP and 225 Nm, as well as a new four-cylinder 2.2-liter diesel producing 197HP and 435 Nm.

Aside from the 2.4-liter petrol unit, in North America, the new Sorento will also be offered with a 3.5-liter V6 engine producing 277HP and 335 Nm. Depending on the engine, the Sorento can be equipped with five-speed and six-speed manual and automatic transmissions.

Sorento buyers will be able to select between two-wheel and four-wheel drive layouts. The 4WD versions can tow trailers weighing up to 2,500 kg or 5,511 lbs.

"With the new Sorento, we have created an all-new, seven-seater CUV that will soon be recognized as an 'exciting all-rounder' with a much broader customer appeal," commented Hyoung-Keun Lee, Senior Executive Vice President & COO of the International Business Division. "Despite the current economic uncertainties, we are confident that the new Sorento will significantly increase Kia's share of the CUV market, achieving annual global sales of 140,000 units from 2010," he added.

Worldwide sales of the new Sorento are expected to begin towards the end of the year.
