Video: Maybach Exelero Concept at full power

The stunning Maybach Exelero Concept made its debut in 2005 and got many fans thinking (and pleading) of whether it would make it into production. The Exelero Concept has been noted as one of the world's most iconic designs in automotive history. The Exelero Concept was also featured in a Jay-Z rap music video. One thing, we didn't get to see was the Exelero actually driving, or in high-speed for that matter. In the video, the Exelero tops out an astounding 351km/h. Anyways, here's the real deal from Motor Authority, showcasing the Exelero preparing for high-speed runs at Italy's Nardo track.

GM announces pricing of 2008 Saturn Vue, starting from $21,395

GM has announced the pricing of the 2008 Saturn Vue crossover today. The base price sticker rose a staggering $3300 over last year's model. The new Vue, priced from $21,395, is designed to compete with the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V and the Ford Escape.

GM's global vehicle chief engineer told Automotive News that the higher pricing is the result of more standard equipement and overall value. The base model of last year's model was equipped with a smaller 4-cyl. engine and manual transmisson. The 2008 model receives a larger engine and automatic transmission as standard equipment.

Ford wins top honors as "most trusted" brand in the UK, seventh year straight

The folks over at Dearborn must have learned some sort of a lesson when they heard their counterpart over in the UK was voted the most trusted brand, seven years straight. Reader's Digest conducted a survey done by its subscribers to determine which carmaker wins their heart the most. With over 24,000 participants and competitiors from 15 different countries and 38 product categories, Ford beat them out and was voted #1, seventh year straight.

[Source: Motor Authority]

The survey name might indicate that Ford was chosen as the "most trusted" brand, but there were many criterias that ultimately chose Ford. Value, image, quality and customer relations with such assets as "responsibility towards the environment" are just a few to mention.

This survey first began in 2000, and Ford won all of the honors for every single year. Here, we're starving for some of that acclaim as Ford USA is slowly going down the drain. We have to give props to the Flex though, which exceeded our expectations, and we are eager to see how the Flex does by the numbers when it goes on sale next year. Ford of Europe consists of a spectacular line-up including the 2007 European Car of the Year, the S-MAX, the Mondeo mid-size which just received a redesign this year, and the chic Focus.

Chrysler introduces Aspen Two-Mode Hybrid

Daimler-Chrysler quietly introduced the two-mode hybrid variant of its Aspen SUV today. It will join the Durango Two-Mode Hybrid, the sister car of the Aspen, early next year when it goes on sale. Both the Durango and the Aspen Hybrid will be powered by a two-mode hybrid system coupled with the 5.7L HEMI V8.

To add more fuel efficiency, the HEMI for both models will be equipped with variable cylinder deactivation, which turns off four of the eight cylinders when used for light load conditions. It is claimed that it improves gas mileage by twenty-five percent overall and up to fourty percent in city driving. The hybrid system is a co-operation between DCX, GM, and BMW.

PRESS RELEASE:

Aspen Joins Chrysler Group Hybrid Lineup And Yeah, It's Gotta HEMI®!

• Chrysler Aspen Hybrid joins Dodge Durango Hybrid in 2008
• Vehicles feature 5.7-liter HEMI® Hybrid with Multi-displacement System (MDS)
• HEMI Hybrid delivers more than 25-percent fuel economy improvement
• Full-size SUVs to boast nearly 40-percent mpg improvement in the city
• Chrysler Group's advanced hybrid system leapfrogs traditional hybrid design

Auburn Hills, Mich. - That new Chrysler Aspen Hybrid gotta HEMI®?
Yes, it does – as does the new Dodge Durango Hybrid. Both vehicles, powered by Chrysler Group's all-new 5.7-liter HEMI Hybrid powertrain, debut next year as the first volume-production hybrid offerings from the Chrysler Group and the first vehicles to feature DaimlerChrysler's advanced two-mode hybrid technology.

"The all-new Chrysler Group HEMI Hybrid will offer our customers the best of both worlds: renowned performance and significantly improved fuel economy," said Frank Klegon, Executive Vice President – Product Development, Chrysler Group. "With the new HEMI-powered Chrysler Aspen Hybrid, we are delivering the ultimate combination of fuel efficiency, overall performance and capability in a premium full-size SUV."

The new 5.7-liter HEMI Hybrid is expected to deliver an overall fuel economy improvement of more than
25 percent, including an improvement of nearly 40 percent in the city.

The HEMI powerplant, in hybrid form, will continue to feature Chrysler Group's Multi-displacement System (MDS), which allows the engine to seamlessly alternate between four-cylinder mode when less power is needed and V-8 mode when more power is in demand. For the fifth year in a row - and every year since its 2003 re-introduction - Chrysler Group's famous 5.7-liter HEMI engine has earned a place on Ward's 10 Best Engines list.

The new Chrysler Aspen Hybrid and Dodge Durango Hybrid vehicles represent a bold change in what is generally a "me too" category. Chrysler Group's full-size hybrid vehicles will deliver seamless dependable power on demand in an efficient package. With an electrically variable transmission (featuring two electric motors), two full hybrid modes of operation, and four fixed mechanical gear ratios, the drive system improves fuel economy around town and at highway speeds.

Chrysler Aspen

Boasting elegant Chrysler styling, unsurpassed capability and performance and abundant premium amenities, the Chrysler Aspen is a premium SUV that is a value alternative to luxury-priced competitors. Offering more for less, Aspen features numerous premium features, elegant Chrysler design, 30 safety features and best-in-class horsepower, torque and interior room.

Two-mode Hybrid

Chrysler Group's two-mode hybrid powertrain - jointly developed by DaimlerChrysler, General Motors and the BMW Group - represents a major automotive industry milestone due to the unprecedented fully integrated combination of electric motors with a fixed-gear transmission.

As a result of the low- and high-speed electric continuously variable transmission (ECVT) modes, the system is commonly referred to as the two-mode hybrid. However, the sophisticated fuel-saving system also incorporates four fixed gear ratios for high efficiency and power-handling capabilities in a broad variety of vehicle applications. The new Chrysler Aspen Hybrid and Dodge Durango Hybrid vehicles can be powered either by the electric motors or by the 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine – or a combination of the two. During the two ECVT modes and four fixed-gear operations, the hybrid system can use the electric motors for boosting and/or regenerative braking. When full power is needed, the system automatically adjusts for passing, driving steep grades or hauling a trailer. The result is trend-setting hybrid technology that provides superior fuel economy, performance and load-carrying capability.

Joint Development Center

Located in Troy, Mich., the DaimlerChrysler, GM and BMW Hybrid Development Center jointly developed the overall modular two-mode hybrid system and the individual components: electric motors, transmission, high-voltage battery, high-performance electronics, wiring, safety systems, energy management and hybrid system control units. In addition, the Hybrid Development Center is responsible for system integration and project management.

Chrysler Group Advanced Propulsion Technology

Hybrid technology is one part of Chrysler Group's advanced propulsion technology umbrella, which also includes efficient gasoline engines, advanced clean-diesel technology, and ethanol flex-fuel and zero-emission fuel cell vehicles. DaimlerChrysler is the only automaker building plug-in hybrids and testing them with customers in the United States.

Toyota to debut Smart Fortwo-sized minicar in Frankfurt

With all this mini-car craze that is starting to rise in the US, it couldn't have come at a better time for Toyota. At this year's Frankfurt International Autoshow this September, Toyota will unveil a new minicar, sized similarly to the minicar icon Smart Fortwo, which is aimed at European markets. Automotive News Europe reports that the car should go on sale in Europe by the middle of 2008.

Toyota showcased many minicars in Europe, such as the Aygo subcompact and the Yaris. Both of them proved successful by the numbers. The Endo Concept (pictured above), shown in 2005, was Toyota's one of many concept cars that displayed super efficiency for urban living, especially in congested cities.

There were no reports regarding a US release. Nonetheless, there is no saying that there is no possibility of it arriving into our shores, especially with the rising concern of fuel efficiency these days.

GM's Rick Wagoner getting a 29% INCREASE in salary for 2007, not a 25% CUT

Many well-respected automotive news websites such as Automotive News and Reuters, reported the eye-catching news of a salary cut for the Chairman and CEO of GM last week. It was reported that Wagoner would receive a 25% cut in his base salary for 2007. It all related to GM's cost-cutting movement to hopefully have a litle heavier pocket as a result.

CARSCOOP conducted a simple math equation to see if Wagoner REALLY got a reduction. GM reported that Wagoner's base salary for 2006 was $2.2 million while this year, it dropped 25% to $1.65 million.

Here's the turnaround though. While his base salary was $2.2 million, GM agreed to cut his pay by 50% on that same year by a deal made in February of the same year. As a result, his "pay check" was reduced 42% and got $1.28 million as a result. That still doesn't contradict to his base salary of that year. But, you get the idea. Therefore, Wagoner is actually getting 28.9% more than last year's "pay check", even though his contract doesn't indicate the change made last year. Kudos to CARSCOOP and Bloomberg for figuring it out.

GM gives us a glimpse of the production Camaro and something else

GM released an image yesterday of the three top executives posing in front of a clay model of the 2009 Camaro. Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner, Vice President Bob Lutz and Fritz Henderson, standing respectively, the pic was captioned "production clay model". The clay model looks strikingly similarly to the Concept, something that doesn't happen often in the automotive world regarding concepts morphing into production models. However, the more interesting part of the image was what was behind the executives.

Continued- Article, zoomed in shot of poster

Something that caught our eyes was the barely noticeable poster of what seems to be renderings of a possible future Chevrolet model. GMInsideNews was able to zoom in on the mystery vehicle, and we can definitely tell that it's a Chevrolet with the Chevrolet Volt-style front end. Many people took guesses from the future RWD Impala to a possible replacement of the Chevelle Coupe. We can't put our money on either of those because the car faintly shows only one door on the side, which indicates a coupe. However, no plans were announced of a successor of the Chevelle ever in the pipeline.

Whichever car it might be (it might be a different car after all), it sure looks great and we hope to see it alot closer someday.

Wa-wo-wee-wa: Shaquille O'Neal's 'stretched' Lamborghini Gallardo

Shaquille O'Neal, better known as Shaq, received special customizations on his Lamborghini Gallardo today. The star of the Miami Heat needed some length onto his Gallardo and felt uncomfortable when squeezing his 7-foot-1 body into the tiny little interior the Gallardo offered. Gaffoglio Family Metalcrafters, a well-known supplier to big companies such as Boeing and PPG Aerospace Glass, added 12 inches of length in the middle of his Gallardo.

[Source: Edmunds]

Continued- Article

Lengthened custom doors, roof and side windows were added to maximise the interior space of the car, while maintaining its 'visual integrity'. Glass fabrication was a big challenge for them and they relied on their aerospace and coachworks division to make everything right. Well, sure enough, not many could detect a trace of difference between the original Gallardo and the Shaq-ified custom version. It certainly looks appealing to us and we wouldn't mind cruising around the 'stretched' Gallardo ourselves.

Next Ford Fiesta set to arrive in US in 2009

The next-generation Ford Fiesta subcompact hatchback will arrive in the US in 2009. Motor Trend conducted a short interview with Ford execs, and it appears the redesigned version will go on sale in Europe in 2008.

The US version will look nearly identical to its European counterpart, said Martin Smith, Ford of Europe Design Chief. The North American (and the European) version will retain the "Kinetic" design theme found on the Mondeo and the S-MAX, instead of using the "Bold" design theme found on the Taurus, Edge, and Flex.

[Source: LeftlaneNews]

Continued- Article

It will definitely be a "Kinetic-design" car, noted Smith. Most likely, the Fiesta will cue the trapezoidal grille, sharp headlights, and bulging wheel arches, all cued on Ford's Reflex Concept shown in early 2006.

The Fiesta is set to launch in the US sometime in late 2009, and will share platform with the recently introduced Mazda2 (Demio in Japan). The next Fiesta will lose some of its body weight and will feature a 1.6-liter powertrain. Expect a wider variety of petrol and diesel engines when it hits market in Europe in 2008.

Saab 9-3 Cabrio facelift snapped...again

It seems that new spyshots of the Saab 9-3 facelift, Cabrio or Estate, pop up just too often these days. Mind that they're also pretty clean shots with all of them so far showing light or no camo. A member over at Saabturboclub snapped decent pics of the Saab 9-3 Cabrio facelift testing relatively without care on public streets. In one of the pics, you can see a Saab dealer nearby. Anyways, all the details we spilled are in our previous post. More pics are after the jump.

Lexus to offer hybrid variant of LF-A supercar

Who could've ever imagined a Lexus supercar just 10 years ago when they were just breaking ground on US land? Lexus is already near-completion to its first supercar project, and we're anticipating it big time. We already got a few glimpses of it when Lexus revealed two variants of the LF-A Concept, and we are amazed. The LF-A will most likely feature a newly-developed 5.0L V10, churning out more than 500hp. A hybrid variant is also in the pipeline, suggested by recent reports over at Motor Trader.

[Source: Motor Authority]

Continued- Article

A top-exec over at Lexus UK, Steve Settle, had an interview with Motor Trader and noted that the new LF-A is being developed from scratch. He also noted that a hybrid variant was in the pipeline stating, "it promises to set a fresh standard in the hybrid technology to which Lexus is totally commited and we are very excited about it."

The LS600h luxury hybrid sedan is set to launch in the UK next month, and a near-near-production version of the LF-A will debut in mid-October at this year's Tokyo Motor Show.

Lexus gave us a pretty good idea of how the production LF-A will look like, when they unveiled the second LF-A (pictured above) at this year's North American International Autoshow. Lexus Division group VP Bob Carter stated that the LF-A Concept is very close to a vehicle that would slot into the line-up and one that will further spark interest in Lexus as a brand.

2009 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Scooped!

Unlike other rumours and renderings we’ve been seen lately, the C63 AMG is really coming to a Mercedes outlet near you either this fall or early 2008. AutoMotorundSport not only managed to scoop the top-end C-Class performing test runs in Germany but they also came up with a rendering giving us a preview of the car.

[Source: CARSCOOP]

Continued- Article

While the previous gen C55 AMG wore a 5.4 V8 pumping out 367Hp, the 2009 C63 AMG will take advantage of the 6,2-litre V8 engine that’s fitted in the CLK63 AMG, E63 AMG, CLS63AMG etc. With the help of a compressor, the V8 will deliver around 500Hp, thus making the C63 AMG the most powerful kid on the German block, out-powering both the Audi RS4 and BMW M3. We don’t know if that’ll be enough to give its two German rivals a lesson, but it’ll sure give the C63 AMG a place in the spotlight when it’s unveiled.

Mitsubishi turns a profit for the first time in four years

In recent years, Mitsubishi's cross-town counterparts, Honda and Toyota, have been racking up record sales and profits, with the former showing steady growth, while the latter is taking over the world. Unfortunately, the tri-diamond folks haven't been fairing nearly as well. Mitsubishi has been in the red for four years now, mainly due to lackluster products (EVO aside) and a number of scandals that involved cover-ups and quality issues.

[Source: Autoblog]

Continued- Article

As of yesterday, that's all changed – well, at least the automaker's bottom line. For the first time since the fiscal year 2002 (ends in March), Mitsubishi has turned a profit of 8.7 billion yen or $73 million US. The reason for the turnaround stems from a weak yen and an annual sales increase of around four-percent.

Hopefully, that incremental growth on Mitsu's part can be sustained and from what we've been told by the automaker's execs, sales of the new Lancer are a big part of it. If Mitsubishi can extend some of that mojo across its lineup, DSM fans will have a reason to rejoice, again.

Alfa Romeo GT Blackline for UK market

The Alfa GT is already one of the most eye-catching cars on the road, but now it’s been upgraded in a limited edition Blackline model that includes unique 18” alloy wheels, metallic black paint and interior sports styling . Most limited edition packs aren’t very well priced, but Alfa is offering this model at lower than the current entry-level version in the UK.

[Source: Motor Authority]

Continued- Article, one more image

All limited edition Alfa GT BlackLine models feature a dramatic exterior look, with metallic black paint, satin effect wing mirrors, chrome exhaust and bespoke 18” alloy wheels. Inside, the cabin gets black leather sports seats and steering wheel with red stitching, aluminum sports pedals, an aluminum gearknob with red stitching on the gaiter, and a Bose sound system. The black-on-black look makes the GT look even more muscular than before, in our opinion.

Sadly, no engine or power upgrades have been made available, leaving the sporty looking car with performance figures well below expectations. The 165bhp 2.0 JTS petrol engine goes from 0-62mph in 8.7 seconds, while the 150bhp 1.9 JTDM diesel engine takes 9.6s to do the same.

2008 Chevrolet Corvette receives LS3 engine, 36 more horsepowers

The spy shots last week told us what to expect and now GM has unveiled the 2008 Corvette, fitted with a new 6.2L LS3 V8 engine developing 430hp and 575 Nm of torque. Other changes include the option of a new dual-mode exhaust system, improved manual and automatic transmissions, better steering feel, upgraded interior, and even two new exterior colors.

[Source: Motor Authority]

Continued- Article, hi-res image gallery, official press release

The manual transmission shifting improvements include a more positive and direct feel during gear changes, with better gate-to-gate location. The six-speed paddle-shift automatic transmission on Coupe and Convertible is improved with new hardware and a new controller calibration that deliver quicker shifts.

Corvette Coupe and Convertible models come with a new split-spoke wheel design for ’08, which was first introduced on the limited-edition ’07 Indianapolis 500 Pace Car replicas.

Sadly, the Z06 remains at 505hp and it looks like we’ll need to wait till the next-gen Corvette to get a major performance upgrade for the top-of-the-line model.

2008 CORVETTE: ICONIC SPORTS CAR RECIEVES LARGER, MORE POWERFUL LS3 6.2L V-8 AND HOST OF DRIVING, INTERIOR REFINEMENTS

Get comfortable. There's so much new and exciting with the 2008 Corvette that you'll want to grab a hot drink, sidle up to your computer screen and absorb all the details.

The changes involve everything from an all-new, larger and more powerful V-8 engine to refinements in driving characteristics that solidify the Corvette's position as the preeminent American sports car – and further the argument that it is one of the world's best. There are also a host of exterior and interior refinements that raise the Corvette's luxury status and enhance the feeling of craftsmanship.

"Corvette is an uncompromising sports car that rewards its owners with impeccable performance and great comfort," said Ed Peper, Chevrolet general manager. "The changes and enhancements to the 2008 Corvette reflect continual improvements that speak to Chevrolet's unflagging commitment to building the best sports car – and with nearly 55 years of experience, the Corvette just keeps getting better and better."

Also back again for '08 is the 505-horsepower Corvette Z06, an American super car that has won over enthusiasts, journalists and racers around the world for its balance of racetrack-bred performance, daily-driving civility and value.

Here's a look at the new and enhanced features for '08 Corvette models:

Engine – A new, 6.2L LS3 small-block V-8 is the standard engine in Coupe and Convertible models. It is rated at 430 horsepower (321 kW)* and 424 lb.-ft. of torque (586 Nm)* with the standard exhaust system; with the new, optional two-mode exhaust system, power ratings increase to 436 horses / 325 kW and 428 lb.-ft. / 592 Nm. As a result, the standard Corvette is true supercar, capable of 190 mph. The LS3 with the six-speed paddle-shift automatic is the fastest automatic-equipped Corvette ever, with 0-60 mph capability of 4.3 seconds.

This new iteration of the storied small-block family features a revised, larger-bore cylinder block – 4.06-inch / 103.25 mm vs. the previous 6.0L's 4.00-inch / 101.62 mm bores – high-flow, LS7/L92-style cylinder heads; larger-diameter pistons; revised camshaft and camshaft timing; revised valvetrain with offset intake rocker arms; high-flow intake manifold; high-flow fuel injectors from the Z06's LS7 engine; and a new engine beauty cover.

The LS3 features an aluminum cylinder block with cast iron cylinder liners. In addition to its larger bores, which help create a 376-cubic-inch displacement, the block casting also features revisions and machining in the bulkheads that enhance its strength and improved bay to bay breathing. But while the bore of the 6.2L engine is increased when compared with the previous 6.0L engine, the engine's stroke remains at 3.62 inches (92 mm). The pistons for the larger 6.2L engine also are new and are designed for its high-rpm performance capability.

Breathing for the new 6.2L engine is accomplished via new, high-flow cylinder heads. They're based on the large port/large valve design found on the LS7 engine and other GM L92 engines, with larger-capacity, straighter intake ports. The design optimizes intake flow to the combustion chamber and the exhaust ports are also designed for better flow.

Complementing the larger-port design of the heads are commensurately sized valves. The intake valve size alone increases from 2.00 inches (50.8 mm) to 2.16 inches (55 mm) – an increase of nearly 9 percent. The intake valves feature lightweight hollow stems, which enable the engine's 6,600-rpm capability. The exhaust valves also are large, measuring 1.60 inches (40.4 mm) in diameter.

To accommodate the engine's large valves and enable more direct intake port flow, the intake-side rocker arms are offset 6 mm between the valve tip and the push rod. Actuating the valves is a new camshaft, with intake-side lobes providing more than a 5-percent percent in increase in lift, from 0.521-inch to 0.551-inch (13.25 mm to 14 mm). Exhaust-valve lift remains unchanged from the LS2. The camshaft timing was revised to optimize performance with the higher-lift intake cam profile.

Ensuring the cylinder heads receive all the air they can handles falls to a new, acoustically tuned intake manifold. The composite design is manufactured with a "lost core" process that improves runner to runner variation and reduces airflow losses. An acoustic foam material is used to reduce radiated engine noise; it is sandwiched between the outer top of the manifold and an additional "skull cap" acoustic shell. Also new beauty covers atop the engine shield the rocker covers and also feature a noise-reducing, acoustically tuned insert to provide a more refined engine sound.

Exhaust system – Optional on '08 Coupe and Convertible models is a new, two-mode performance exhaust system. Similar in design and function to the system used on the Z06, the dual-mode exhaust uses vacuum-actuated outlet valves, which control engine noise during low-load operation, but open for maximum performance during high-load operation. It is not identical to the Z06 system; the Coupe/Convertible uses a 2.5-inch-diameter exhaust, while the Z06 uses a three-inch system.

With the new, dual-mode performance exhaust, power output for Coupe/Convertible rises from 430 horsepower (321 kW) and 424 lb.-ft. of torque (575 Nm) to 436 horses (325 kW) and 428 lb.-ft. (580 Nm). This system gives the Corvette a more aggressive exhaust sound character that will appeal to performance enthusiasts.

Transmissions and axle ratios – The shifting efforts for both the six-speed manual transmission and paddle-shift six-speed automatic transmissions have been improved in '08 Corvette models. The manual transmission shifting improvements include a more positive and direct feel during gear changes, with better gate-to-gate location.

The six-speed paddle-shift automatic transmission on Coupe and Convertible is improved with new hardware and a new controller calibration that deliver quicker shifts. This change bolsters the feeling of performance and driver control when using the shifting paddles.

Also new for '08 models is the availability of the 2.73 performance axle ratio with the automatic transmission. It is included with the Z51 package.

Steering system – The Corvette's precise rack-and-pinion steering system is revised to provide improved feel at all speeds. The revisions are due to a new, premium machining process of the system's internal components, a new, stiffer intermediate shaft and controller calibration changes.

Wheels – Corvette Coupe and Convertible models come with a new split-spoke wheel design for '08. The design was introduced on the limited-edition '07 Indianapolis 500 Pace Car replicas with a Sterling Silver finish. The standard 18-inch front wheels and 19-inch rear wheels feature a Sparkle Silver finish, with a Competition Gray version optional.

Also new is a distinctive, performance-oriented forged aluminum wheel for Coupe and Convertible. It comes in a polished finish.

Exterior colors – There are two new premium exterior colors available with 2008 Corvette models: Jetstream Blue Metallic Tintcoat and Crystal Red Metallic Tintcoat; they replace Le Mans Blue Metallic and Monterey Red Metallic Tintcoat.

Custom Leather-Wrapped Interior Package – Available on Coupe, Convertible and Z06 models, the new Custom Leather-Wrapped Interior Package offers a stylish, two-tone leather-appointed cabin with details that enhance the feeling of Corvette's craftsmanship. Details include:

-Two-tone, leather-wrapped upper and lower instrument panel, door pads and seats
-Choice of new, exclusive colors: Linen or Sienna, with unique color breakup
-Padded door panel armrests
-"Corvette" embroidered on passenger-side dash pad
-Embroidered crossed flags logo on headrests
-Unique center trim plate with Bias pattern.
-Interior enhancements – All models feature a new wrapped instrument panel center trim plate, with bright surrounds for the shifter and cupholder. There are also new metal-finish door sill plates that greet passengers as they step into the vehicle, as well as a new lighted control knob for the available Magnetic Selective Ride Control.

Feature changes and enhancements – All Corvette models now come standard with features that were previously optional or part of equipment packages. They include:

-OnStar with available Turn-By-Turn Navigation
-XM Satellite Radio
-Auto-dimming rearview mirrors (with compass)
-Audio input jack on all radio systems except navigation; Personal Audio Link is available as a dealer-installed item with the navigation system.
-The '08 Corvettes also come with a new Keyless Access fob, which features the key and remote-function controls integrated in a single unit.

Corvette design and interior details

Dramatic fender forms and exposed headlamps combine with the grille to create a strong visual identity for the Corvette, while the tapered rear deck and fascia improve high-speed performance. The lean rear design sports round taillamps and center-exit exhaust. The fixed Xenon high-intensity discharge headlamps provide superior lighting performance. With a 0.286 coefficient of drag, the Coupe models are the most aerodynamic Corvettes ever.

The 2008 Corvette Convertible features a power-operated soft top with the 3LT package; an easy-to-operate manual top is standard. Both configurations use a five-layer fabric that conceals the underlying structure for a good top-up appearance, plus it helps preserve the car's excellent aerodynamics and reduces road noise.

Corvette's interior is inspired by the car's dual-cockpit heritage. High-quality materials, craftsmanship and functionality help deliver premium quality meant to enhance performance driving. The instrument panel and doors are covered with cast-skin foam-in-place trim that looks like a leather-wrapped, padded panel. It is warm and inviting and has double the life of conventional trim materials.

An AM/FM/XM radio with CD player and audio input jack is standard. An optional Bose audio system with an in-dash six-disc changer adds to the choices available to the audiophile owner. Steering-wheel mounted audio controls – introduced in '07 – are included with the Bose premium system.

A full-function OnStar system is standard and an onboard navigation system with voice recognition is available. Using a 6.5-inch (165 mm) color touch-screen display, the DVD-based system contains all the map data for the 48 contiguous states and most of Canada on one disc.

Driving dynamics

Corvette Coupe and Convertible have a hydroformed steel rail backbone structure, which features cored composite floors, an enclosed center tunnel, rear-mounted transmission and aluminum cockpit structure. Suspension cradles, control arms, knuckles, springs, dampers, bushings, stabilizer bars and steering gear have all been redesigned. New Goodyear Extended Mobility Tires (EMT) take advantage of the latest sidewall design and compound technology for run-flat capabilities.

Three suspension choices allow drivers to choose the setup that best suits their driving style. The standard suspension is tuned for a balance of ride comfort and precise handling. Corvette is now more poised at even higher handling levels, yet easier to drive.

The optional Magnetic Selective Ride Control suspension features magneto-rheological dampers able to detect road surfaces and adjust the damping rates to those surfaces almost instantly for optimal ride control. Cross-dilled brake rotors are included when this feature is selected, allowing customers to combine the larger brakes from the Z51 performance package with the comfort of Magnetic Selective Ride Control.

The Z51 Performance Package brings Coupe and Convertible performance very close to the widely admired previous generation Z06. The Z51 offers more aggressive dampers and springs, larger stabilizer bars, Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar EMT tires, enhanced cooling and larger cross-drilled brake rotors (13.4 inches / 340 mm in front and 13 inches / 330 mm in rear) for optimum track performance while still providing a comfortable ride.

With each suspension, three standard dynamic chassis control systems – anti-lock braking, traction control and Active Handling – operate in concert. In all, the dynamic chassis control systems are smarter, less intrusive and more adept at making the total driving experience precisely what drivers have come to expect from their Corvette.

Corvette Z06 details

As the fastest, most powerful and most technologically advanced production model in Corvette's history, t he Corvette Z06 offers an unprecedented level of capability and technology, making it one of the best performance values on the market.

Design – The Z06 has an unmistakable and aggressive appearance, with design cues that include:

-A wide front fascia with a large, forward-facing grille opening, a splitter along the bottom and wheel opening extensions along the sides to provide aerodynamic downforce
-A cold air scoop in front of the hood that integrates an air inlet system for the engine
-The trailing edge of the front wheel opening is radiused to achieve improved drag, but protects the body finish with a tough molding, and a large air extractor is located behind the wheel
-A fixed-roof body style optimizes body rigidity and mass
-Wider rear fenders with flares cover the massive rear tires and a brake cooling scoop in front of the wheels visually balances the fender extractor
-A tall rear spoiler houses the CHMSL on the top of the rear fascia
-10-spoke wheels (18-inch, front; 19-inch, rear)
-Four large stainless steel exhaust outlets
-Z06 badging on the carbon fiber front fenders
-The aerodynamics of the Z06's exterior were shaped by the experiences of the Corvette racing program, where high-speed stability and cornering capability are paramount. And while the race cars use large rear wings, the Z06's elevated spoiler provides sufficient downforce to balance the road-worthy front splitter without adversely affecting aerodynamic drag. The Z06's Cd is 0.34.

For all its race-inspired functionality, the Z06 is designed to be a daily-driveable high-performance vehicle. To that end, comfort and convenience are held to a very high standard. High-Intensity Discharge lighting, fog lamps, leather seating, dual-zone air conditioning, cabin air filtration and head-up display (HUD) with track mode and g-meter are standard.

The Z06 gauge cluster displays the Z06 logo on the 7000-redline tachometer and has a readout on the oil pressure gauge to reflect the higher standard pressure of the dry-sump oiling system. The seats feature two-tone leather surfaces, with Z06-logo embroidery and contrasting stitching.

Z06 options include a Bose audio system with an in-dash six-CD changer, polished, Competition Gray or chrome wheels, a telescoping steering wheel, heated seats, side-impact air bags, a navigation system with GPS and universal home remote.

LS7 engine – The Z06's LS7 7.0L engine delivers 505 horsepower (377 kW) in a 3,132-pound (1,421 kg) package – a combination that delivers 0-60 performance of 3.7 seconds in first gear, quarter-mile times of 11.7 seconds at 125 mph and a top speed of 198 mph (as recorded on Germany's Autobahn). It also provides maximum lateral acceleration of 1.04 g and 60-0 braking in 111.3 feet; it also circuited Germany 's famed N ü rburgring in a time of 7:43 .

The LS7 reintroduced the 427-cubic-inch engine to the Corvette lineup. It is easily identified under the hood by red engine covers with black lettering. The LS7 shares the same basic Gen IV V-8 architecture as the Corvette's 6.0-liter LS2, but it uses a different cylinder block casting with pressed-in steel cylinder liners to accommodate the engine's larger diameter, 4.125-inch (104.8 mm) cylinder bores.

Internally, the LS7's reciprocating components make use of racing-derived lightweight technology, including titanium connecting rods and intake valves, to help boost horsepower and rpm capability. The rpm fuel shut-off limit is 7,100 rpm. The LS7's details include:

-Dry-sump oiling system
-Unique cylinder block casting with large, 104.8-mm bores and pressed-in cylinder liners
-Forged steel main bearing caps
-Forged steel crankshaft
-Titanium connecting rods with 101.6-mm stroke
-Cast aluminum flat-top pistons
-11.0:1 compression
-High-lift camshaft
-Racing-derived CNC-ported aluminum cylinder heads with titanium intake valves and sodium-filled exhaust valves
-Low-restriction air intake system
-Hydroformed exhaust headers with unique "quad flow" collector flanges.
-One of the clearest examples of the LS7's race-bred technology is its use of titanium connecting rods. They weigh just 464 grams apiece and besides being lightweight, which enhances high-rpm performance and rpm range, titanium makes the rods extremely durable.

The LS7's CNC-ported aluminum cylinder heads are designed to meet the high airflow demands of the engine's 7.0-liter displacement. A hydraulic roller camshaft with 0.588/0.593-inch valve lift is used to allow plenty of air to circulate in and out of the engine. To ensure optimal, uninterrupted airflow, the LS7's heads have straight, tunnel-like intake runners. Very large by production-vehicle standards – even racing standards – they are designed to maintain fast airflow velocity, providing excellent torque at low rpm and exhilarating horsepower at high rpm. The heads feature 70-cc combustion chambers that are fed by huge, 56-mm-diameter titanium intake valves. They are complemented by 41-mm sodium-filled exhaust valves.

To accommodate the large valve face diameters, the heads' valve seats are siamesed; and, taken from experience with the engines of C6.R racecars, the LS7's valve angles are held at 12 degrees – vs. 15 degrees for the LS2 – to enhance airflow through the ports.

The LS7 has a dry-sump oiling system designed to keep the engine fully lubricated during the high cornering loads the Corvette Z06 is capable of producing. An engine compartment-mounted 8-quart reservoir delivers oil at a constant pressure to a conventional-style oil pump pick-up at the bottom of the engine. The pressurized oil feed keeps the oil pick-up continually immersed in oil at cornering loads exceeding 1 g.

Oil circulates through the engine and down to the oil pan, where it is sent back to the reservoir via a scavenge pump. The large-capacity reservoir, combined with a high efficiency air-to-oil cooler, provides necessary engine oil cooling under the demands of the engine's power output. With the dry-sump system, oil is added to the engine via the reservoir tank – which includes the oil level dipstick.

Drivetrain – The Corvette Z06's powertrain and drivetrain systems are matched to the LS7's performance capability. The light, four-into-one headers discharge into close-coupled catalytic converters and through two-mode mufflers. The mufflers each feature a vacuum-actuated outlet valve, which controls exhaust noise during low-load operation but opens for maximum power.

At the rear of the LS7 engine, a single-mass flywheel and lightweight, high-capacity clutch channel torque to the rear transaxle. The six-speed manual transmission has been strengthened to handle the LS7's increased torque load. The transmission includes a pump that sends transmission fluid to the front radiator for cooling. Upon its return, the fluid removes additional heat from the differential lube before returning to the transmission. The six-speed transmission connects to a limited-slip differential, with enlarged ring and pinion gears. Stronger axle half-shafts with tougher universal joints transmit power to the rear wheels.

Structure – The Z06 has a unique aluminum body structure for optimum stiffness and light weight for the fixed-roof bodystyle. Perimeter rails are one-piece hydroformed aluminum members featuring cast suspension nodes, which replace many welded steel components on other Corvette models. Other castings, stampings and extrusions are combined into the innovative structure with state-of-the-art manufacturing technologies.

Advanced structural composites featuring carbon fiber are bonded to the aluminum structure. The wider front wheelhouses, for example, are carbon composites and the passenger compartment floors combine carbon-fiber skins with an ultra-lightweight balsa wood core.

The Z06 has a new magnesium cradle that serves as the attachment point for the engine and some front suspension components. Magnesium is lighter than aluminum yet incredibly strong. The magnesium cradle helps improve the front-to-rear weight distribution, as do carbon-fiber front fenders and wheelhouses. Engineers also moved the battery from underhood to a position in the rear cargo area, behind one of the rear wheels.

The mass reductions are offset by some added performance enablers, including dry-sump lubrication, exhaust system with outlet valves, larger wheels and tires, larger brakes and larger roll stabilizers.

Suspension and brakes – The Z06 retains the 105.7-inch (2686-mm) wheelbase of other Corvette models, as well as the short-long arm suspension and transverse leaf spring design, but it rides on all-new wheels, tires, brakes, as well as its own rear spring and roll stabilizer.

The firmer suspension works harmoniously with large 18 x 9.5-inch cast-spun aluminum wheels and 275/35ZR18 tires in the front, and 19 x 12-inch cast-spun aluminum wheels with 325/30ZR19 tires in the rear – the largest wheel-and-tire combination ever offered on a Corvette. The tires use the latest extended-mobility technology from Goodyear to provide a satisfactory ride, but still allow the vehicle to achieve lateral acceleration of more than 1 g. The extended-mobility tires eliminate the need – and weight – for a spare tire and jack or inflator kit, while also reducing the chance of a sudden loss of handling capability.

Complementing the suspension system and large rolling stock is an equally capable four-wheel disc brake system, consisting of 14-inch (355 mm) vented and cross-drilled front rotors and 13.4-inch (340 mm) vented and cross-drilled rear rotors.

The front rotors are acted upon by large, red-painted six-piston calipers that use six individual brake pads. Individual brake pads are used because they deliver more equalized wear compared to what would otherwise be a pair of very long single-piece pads. For the rear brakes, four-piston calipers with four individual brake pads are used. A Delphi four-channel ABS system is standard, as is a very competent active handling system – complete with a Competitive Driving mode.

* Horsepower and torque are SAE certified.

Volvo Treasure Hunt returns

Volvo was so impressed with last summer's treasure hunt that they're doing it again, but this time around they don't actually bury the XC90 which is up for grabs, but they sank $50,000 worth of gold into the ocean. Finders keepers, but you do need to sign up before hand to get and keep your hands on the loot. Linda Gangeri, advertising manager at Volvo said the following: Aarrrgh matey, there be sunken trrreasure yonder. Round up ya scallywags and set sail. Aaargh. Well not that, but she did say this: "So, yes, we really did sink a treasure chest to the ocean floor filled with gold and the key to a new Volvo. It's sitting there right now just waiting to be found."

Chrysler considers reviving the Cuda

Despite the rising cost of fuel, genuine muscle cars are as popular as ever it seems with new versions of the Ford Mustang, Chrysler 300C SRT-8, Pontiac GTO and Chevy Camaro all scheduled to hit showrooms in the not too distant future. Now, The Detroit News is reporting that Chrysler could be considering creating a new Barracuda based on its upcoming Dodge Challenger, with none other than hot-rod legend Chip Foose dropping the suggestion at the recent New York Auto Show.

[Source: Motor Authority]

Continued- Article

As most of you would know, the original Cuda was sold as a Plymouth but since that brand has gone the way of the dodo, any new model would be sold wearing Chrysler badges. Some of the features of the original model would carry over such as the signature ’72 six-aperture grille, shaker hood and low driving lights.

Bringing the car to market would not be a difficult task for Chrysler when you consider that most of the car’s internals would be shared with the Challenger. But marketing it right and keeping with the essence of the original will be a much tougher task to complete. General Motors made that mistake when it sold the rebadged Holden Monaro as a Pontiac GTO. The General had a tough time selling the few imported vehicles it brought over, and a similar occurrence could easily happen to Chrysler.

GM's OnStart joins MapQuest for desktop planning

Ever look up your destination on MapQuest or Google before leaving the office or home, print it out, then head out the door to your car? GM is now working with MapQuest to send a route from a computer to an OnStar system, skipping the print-out phase entirely — much like a program BMW is conducting in Europe with Google.

[Source: Kicking Tires]

Continued- Article

New OnStar systems in select GM vehicles feature Turn-by-Turn navigation. That means you get directions spoken to you through the OnStar system and shown via small images on your stereo head unit. It’s not a full navigation screen like in many cars. This new MapQuest effort will have the directions ready for you when you get in the car so you won’t have to use the OnStar button then wait for the directions to download.

It seems like a basic idea but a good one, especially for devoted OnStar users. We’re also hearing rumblings from some automakers that investing in built-in navigation systems isn’t ideal because the technology becomes outdated far faster than the cars themselves, which are lasting longer than ever. Add the lower cost, smaller size and augmented capabilities of aftermarket GPS units, and we’d have to think that current built-in nav systems may need to adapt. Which method sounds right to you?

Fortune writer calls for death on Buick, Pontiac, HUMMER, Saab and GMC

Now that GM is officially Number Two, many Monday morning quarterbacks are popping up to "help" the general right the ship. Count Alex Taylor III, Fortune's senior writer, among them. In an interesting article, Taylor outlines reasons why GM should cut loose the anchors of Buick, Pontiac, HUMMER, GMC and Saab in order to move forward and prosper. Reckoning that GM is too bloated with brands and capacity that were fine 50 years ago, Fortune says it's time to move on.

[Source: Autoblog via Fortune]

Where GM has 7 brands, new Number One, Toyota, has just three. Toyota, Lexus and Scion seem to be good enough to cover most buyers' needs, argues Taylor. But GM maintains that cutting brands would be cutting buyers since there are too many loyalists in the fold. The argument is that people want choice and more brands allows more specific targeting of the audience. But Fortune argues that the cost of that level of specification is too high. Taylor proposes keeping Chevy as the Toyota-equivalent volume brand, expanding Cadillac's offerings to go head-to-head with Lexus, and keeping Saturn to compete with Scion in the import-minded segment.

GMC can go completely commercial, but the author sees no redeeming qualities in HUMMER, Pontiac, Buick, or Saab (he might want to check out Buick's prospects in other regions like China before he shrugs it off so easily). It seems like a pretty logical plan that just makes too much sense in an industry fueled by passion and huge egos. It miight make good business sense on the surface, but these are emotional decisions, too. Nobody likes seeing a brand die, especially ones with such heritage. Chrysler has had to do it a lot over the years and GM has had to do it recently with Oldsmobile, but killing off a brand does come with considerable expense, as well. Buying out dealers, losing brand loyalists, and shuffling/reducing your workforce will hit the bottom line hard, too. .

Nissan posts decline in profits

It seems things are much worse over at Nissan than first thought. The carmaker announced its first drop in annual profit in seven years today, the first major loss under the guidance of Carlos Ghosn who admits that it’ll be at least 12 months until key production targets are met. Nissan has been losing ground to its main rivals, Toyota and Honda, with blame centering on higher raw material costs, sales incentives and an aging product range.

[Source: Motor Authority]

Continued- Article

“We told you it would be a challenging year for Nissan. Unfortunately, that prediction proved accurate,” said Ghosn. According to Nissan’s own financials, group net profits were down 54% for the January-March quarter, however, quarterly sales were up roughly 7%. The trouble at Nissan has been going on for some time now. Earlier this year, Ghosn ordered a shakeup of the carmaker’s senior staff so that he’d have more time to concentrate on the company’s financials in Japan. These latest results are the first bad figures on Ghosn’s report card since being appointed as CEO back in 2001. The Frenchman is credited with turning around Nissan’s fortunes in the early parts of the decade and bringing back the carmaker from the brink of bankruptcy.

Nissan is now in need of a rejuvenated product line and is criticized for lacking economic and fuel-efficient hybrid models. But Nissan isn’t the only Japanese carmaker suffering lower profits. Honda reported a 20% drop in profits over the same quarter despite maintaining sales over the period and achieving its seventh record year of sales in a row.

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X revealed

Mitsubishi announced today that its high-performance four-wheel-drive sedan will officially be called the 2008 Lancer Evolution X (pronounced "ten") in Japan and Lancer Evolution in the U.S. The announcement follows months of speculation about the name of the 10th generation Evo as enthusiasts wondered whether the sedan would be named Evo X (pronounced "X") after the Prototype X concept car, which debuted earlier this year at the 2007 Detroit Auto Show, or continue the numbered sequence from its predecessor the Evo IX.

[Source: Edmunds]

Continued- Article, more images

Although the Evolution X name will be used in Japan, each region's marketing team gets a say, and the U.S. group is sticking with the simple Lancer Evolution moniker, claiming that's always been its official name here, and the Roman numeral system was only used by enthusiasts and media.

No matter the name, the photo released today depicts the global 2008 Lancer Evolution that will go into production late this year, and battle an all-new 2008 Subaru WRX for street supremacy.

The 2008 Lancer Evo was expected to make its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, but Mitsubishi said this week that the unveiling has been pushed back to the Toyko Motor Show in October. Expect to see more Evo info and photos trickle into the media during the next several months as the competitive auto show season heats up.

The all-new 2008 Evo features Mitsubishi's Super All-Wheel Control traction and handling system, a new lightweight and high-performance 2.0-liter turbocharged MIVEC engine with aluminum cylinder block and a six-speed manual transmission.

Kelley Blue Book picks coolest vehicles under $18K

Cool doesn't have to be expensive. At least that's what the folks over at Kelley Blue Book figure. The website of the authoritative car-buying resource has put together a list of what they figure are the ten coolest cars you can buy with less than $18,000.

[Source: Autoblog via Kelley Blue Book]

Continued- Article, full list

There are some definite good choices on the list, but some of their choices – and how they arrived at them – leave us scratching our heads and wondering if their cool-meter doesn't need recalibration. Rather than taking the entirely subjective Top Gear "Cool Wall" approach and anointing a car cool or not based purely on image, KBB.com came up with a list of criteria. A cool car, they figure, should have folding seats. Huh? Yeah, versatility was their first criteria, including such features as "clever cubbies and innovative storage solutions" as a prerequisite for classifying a car as cool or not. (That way you've got more places to hide your coolness.) Also taken into consideration were such factors as safety, fuel economy and cabin space, before subjective assessments came into the mix.

The resulting list includes a Chevy pick-up at the top, followed by a Focus, a tiny Honda, an Hyundai, a Jeep, a Mazda3, a Nissan hatch, a Scion, a Suzuki and a VW. Each was included in the sub-$18k list based on Kelley's own proprietary blue-book value.

-2007 Chevrolet Silverado Classic (Regular Cab Manual WT)- $17,015
-2007 Ford Focus SES 2-Door Hatchback- $16,180
-2007 Honda Fit- $14,445
-2007 Hyundai Tiburon- $17,295
-2007 Jeep Patriot- $14,985
-2007 Mazda MAZDA3- $18,175
-2007 Nissan Versa- $13,075
-2007 Scion tC- $16,980
-2007 Suzuki SX4- $17,124
-2007 Volkswagen Rabbit- $15,630

NASCAR expands to China

NASCAR has a solid reputation as a race series firmly entrenched in the southern United States, but has been fighting hard to defeat that image and branch out of Old Dixie. With races lined up in such northern locations as Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, New Hampshire and Wisconsin, NASCAR has long since established itself with the yanks, but with races planned for Mexico and Montreal, the good ol' boys are looking to expand internationally, as well.

[Source: Autoblog]

Continued- Article

It seems that south and north of the border isn't far enough, however, as NASCAR officials recently made a trip half-way around the world to China in order to look into reaching the biggest potential audience in the world.

NASCAR insists that they're not looking to set up a top-tier Nextel Cup race in China, just some junior series events. You've got to figure they've got their sites set on something more ambitious than that, however. The last venture into the Far East finished in 1998 after NASCAR held three annual exhibition races in Japan.

The international expansion forms part of a bigger campaign NASCAR has been waging to establish itself as a top-tier racing series, and the recent defection of F1 stars like Juan Pablo Montoya and Jacques Villeneuve hasn't hurt any, either. No doubt that NASCAR has also been keeping a close eye on competing race series, including Formula One, which has been setting up more international races each season; ChampCars, which is planning a return to Europe; and most of all the Speedcar Series, which is gearing up for races across Asia in American-built stock cars.

Cadillac Escalade EXT chosen as most likely stolen luxury vehicle

Despite their low numbers and high-tech security features, luxury vehicles still rank highly in a list of America’s most likely stolen autos with the recently updated Cadillac Escalade scoring worst among the luxury makes. The results come from the US Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI), which tracks per-vehicle thefts and ranks them according to “the relative average loss payments for theft per insured vehicle year filed under comprehensive coverages.”

[Source: Motor Authority]

Continued- Article, full list

A vehicle that scores below 100 in the HLDI tests experiences only average theft losses, while anything above 100 is deemed higher than average. The HLDI found six of the seven most stolen luxury cars scoring between 209 and 431. Cadillac’s $55,000 Escalade EXT pickup came out with a whopping theft loss score of 1,728, topping the list for the fourth time in a row. “The overall results show the Escalade has not only the highest rate of claims but also very expensive claims when they are filed,” said HLDI senior vice president Kim Hazelbaker.

According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, a vehicle is stolen in the US every 25.5 seconds and costs consumers more than $8.6 billion annually.

1) Cadillac Escalade EXT: Theft loss rate - 1,728 ($55,045)
2) BMW 7-Series: Theft loss rate - 431 ($78,900)
3) (equal third) Land Rover Range Rover SUV: Theft loss rate - 351 ($77,250)
3) (equal third) Lincoln Navigator: Theft loss rate - 351 ($46,575)
4) Lexus GS Sedan: Theft loss rate - 243 ($44,150)
5) Mercedes-Benz S-Class: Theft loss rate - 227 ($86,535)
6) Mercedes-Benz SL-Class: Theft loss rate - 209 ($95,575)

Buick Rendezvous and Pontiac Aztek under investigation by NHTSA

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating nearly 280,000 Buick Rendezvous and Pontiac Aztek SUVs from the 2001 – 2004 model years for a possible leak in the vehicles’ fuel tanks. There have been 213 complaints filed with the agency.

[Source: Kicking Tires via Detroit News]

Continued- Article

The problem stems from improper welding that could allow fuel or an odor to leak from the fuel tanks’ inlet filler pipe. NHTSA says vehicles manufactured after December 2003 are not affected by the problem. This is the second stage of the investigation by NHTSA, and there has not been a recall at this time.

VW plans a next-generation Phaeton, only smaller

Volkswagen's Phaeton could not exactly be described as a run-away success. The German carmaker planned to make a modest 20,000 units, but only managed to sell a quarter that amount. But someone in Wolfsburg must have gotten an "if at first you don't succeed" fortune cookie, and they're determined to give it another shot.

[Source: Autoblog]

Continued- Article

The next Phaeton will save considerably on development costs by sharing its underpinnings with the next A6 from corporate cousin Audi. This, however, is no mere speculation: it comes straight from the mouth of CEO Martin Winterkorn. The end result will be a Phaeton smaller than the one it replaces, bringing costs down and bringing it slightly closer to the top-end Passat to help close the enormous gap in the Volkswagen model line-up.

The current slow-selling Phaeton cost Volkswagen a bundle to develop, but all was not lost as the platform ended up providing the basis for the more successful Bentley Continental range, with its coupe, cabrio and sedan variations. What will happen with the next Continental, you ask? Sources suggest that it will take its underpinnings from the latest Audi A8.

All in all this amounts to a change of direction for the German auto group, which has a history of investing heavily into new models which compete with offerings from their own subsidiaries.

Brilliance headed to the US as early as this year

Having begun its European expansion the next step for China’s Brilliance is the lucrative US market. If everything goes to plan, the company could be shipping models as early as this year or early 2008.Brilliance already sells the BS4 sedan in Europe and plans to expand this to include the BS6 and an unspecified coupe model. Other models in the pipeline for overseas consumption could include a compact car and a mid-size SUV within three years, reports Reuters.

[Source: Motor Authority]

Continued- Article

It’s not clear whether the company will retain the Brilliance brand name or plans to introduce a new brand specifically for the US market. Chinese car makers will need to ensure build quality and reliability are top-notch to compete with Japanese and Korean models. One point in Brilliance’s favour is its partnership with BMW in China, which gives the fledgling company experience in building premium sedans.

Despite this, the BS6 misses out on numerous safety features that are usually equipped as standard these days, such as side and rear airbags, stability and traction control or even a lap-sash seatbelt in the center rear seat. The car runs a 130hp 2.4L four-cylinder engine sourced from Mitsubishi, which pushes the BS6 to 100km/h from rest in a tardy 12 seconds.

It looks like it’ll be at least another five years before the world’s carmakers begin to feel the might of China.

Hyundai i30 Wagon headed to the US, badged as Elantra

Hyundai's new i30 wagon is headed to US dealerships sometime in early 2008, and it will be badged as an Elantra. Wayne Killen, director of product planning at Hyundai Motor America says that, dynamically, the Elantra wagon will be positioned as a sporty handling vehicle. Unlike the European i30 wagon, which is powered by 1.6L engines (gasoline or diesel), the US-spec car will receive the same 138-horse 2.0L four-cylinder found in the current Elantra sedan. A 5-speed manual will come standard, with a 4-speed auto available as an option.

Next Generation VW Golf launch delayed until the end of 2008

According to an interview that Ulrich Hackenburg, head of development for VW gave to Automobilwoche during the Shanghai Show, VW’s best selling model will not be replaced next spring as originally planned. Hackenburg told Automobiwoche journalists that the current Golf is still selling well and that there’s no time-pressure to replace it.

[Source: CARSCOOP]

Continued- Article

At least that’s the official line, cause unofficially, the company’s new boss, Martin Winterkorn, has postponed the 2008 Geneva Show premiere of the Golf VI as he was not pleased at all with the car’s appearance and ordered a complete redesign. In any case, the 6th-gen Golf is now scheduled for a late 2008 launch.

Hackenburg also informed journalist that the new Golf will get an updated version of Audi's 160Hp 1.8TFSI engine –probably with a GT badge since from what we’ve heard, VW is planning to stop the production of the 170Hp 1.4TSI motor due to reliability problems. As for the GTI, it’ll wear a more powerful version of the current 2.0 TFSI motor.

No Volkswagen Scirocco for the US

Volkswagen won’t be selling its upcoming Scirocco sport hatchback in the US, an all-new model due to enter production next year. After bowing out from the auto world back in the early nineties, VW is rejuvenating the Scirocco nameplate with a new hatch based on the Iroc concept car that debuted at last year’s Paris Motor Show.

[Source: Motor Authority]

Continued- Article

“We don’t want it,” said VW America executive VP Adrian Hallmark in an interview with Automotive News. Despite the previous generation’s success, the new Scirocco won’t reach US shores because of fears that it would cannibalize sales of the GTI hatchback, also known as the Rabbit. “The GTI is iconic. It’s as strong a name as the Beetle,” Hallmark says, adding “it’s economically suicidal for us to risk the sales volume and the potential for GTI.”

Hallmark revealed that the Scirocco and GTI will share the same platform including the same 2.0L TFSI engine and chassis but will receive a lower ride-height. VW will instead focus on its sedan range in the US rather than the smaller coupe/hatchback market.

Video: Buick Riviera Concept

Buick (ironically) resurrected the Riviera nameplate at the Shanghai Auto Show with an impressive “gullwing-door” coupe, developed by GM & Shanghai’s joint Pan Asian Technical Center in China. In this video we included includes static and driving clips along with shots from the presentation and a few words from GM’s Vice President of Global Design, Ed Welburn.
