Hyundai to Build Elantra at Alamaba Plant

Hyundai will begin building the new Elantra compact at its factory in Montgomery, Alabama late this fall, the Korean automaker announced today.

The Elantra, previously built in South Korea, will be an all-new model introduced in showrooms early next year. It will make its U.S. debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November.

Hyundai said that with the Elantra, along with the Sonata and the Santa Fe, it is building its three top U.S. sellers in the United States.

Production of the Santa Fe was recently moved to Kia's West Point, Georgia plant to free room for Sonata and Elantra production. The West Point plant also produces the Kia Sorento, which shares platforms with the Hyundai Santa Fe.

The company has produced 1.2 million cars at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama since production began in May 2005.
