Leaked: Kia "VG" Concept revealed before Seoul debut

Kia VG ConceptScheduled for an official unveiling at the upcoming Seoul International Motor Show, Kia's long-awaited "VG" (project name: KND-5) premium sedan will appear in concept guise when it makes its debut. The lone image leaked of the concept above is a very accurate scope into the design of the production model.

The production model will be available in a myriad of engine options including a 2.4L Theta 4-cylinder (for the Korean market) and a 3.5L Lambda V6. The front-wheel drive sedan, which will share its underpinnings with the Hyundai Azera, will go on sale later this year in September for the Korean market. The "VG" will also reach American shores next spring.

Stay tuned for more information as the Seoul Motor Show's opening date of April 2nd gets closer.

Continue reading to view the full image.

UPDATE: Many publications and websites have been posting that the "VG" will replace the current Amanti. This is NOT TRUE as the "VG" will not bear the Amanti nomenclature and the Amanti will be replaced by a more luxurious model, code-named "CH".

Hyundai to offer factory performance upgrades for Genesis Coupe

Hyundai Genesis CoupeHyundai is developing a range of factory performance accessories for the Genesis Coupe in order to help the automaker to capture a share of the aftermarket division that it predicts will flock to the new coupe.

No details regarding specific performance parts were given, but it's safe to assume that most will be of the bolt-on variety offering modest performance gains, especially considering that any performance add-ons will have to comply with Hyundai's 10-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty.

Hyundai will release its Genesis Coupe 2.0T R-Spec later this year, which focuses on value and performance. The R-Spec shares many of its performance-oriented components with the pricier Track model, while removing non-essential premium conveniences (Bluetooth, cruise control, sunroof, etc.) to lower its weight and price. When it hits showrooms this fall, the Hyundai Genesis R-Spec will cost $24,500 including destination charge. Sources at Hyundai also mentioned that an R-Spec version of the 3.8 V-6 powered car could come to market at a future time, based on demand for such a car.

Seoul Preview: Hyundai BLUE-WILL Hybrid Concept

Hyundai has revealed the first pictures of the BLUE-WILL, a plug-in hybrid concept car the automaker will reveal at the Seoul Motor Show on April 2nd, 2009. The car's parallel hybrid system features a 1.6-liter direct injection gasoline motor, a 100 kilowatt electric motor, a continuously variable transmission, and a lithium ion polymer battery pack.

The lithium ion polymer pack is the first use of the technology in a production car, according to Hyundai, and is situated next to the fuel tank underneath the rear seats to maximize storage space in the trunk. The car also has a panoramic roof which integrates dye-sensitized solar cells in order to regenerate the batteries without blocking the view. Various parts of the car will be made from recycled materials, including bioplastics, plants, and soft drink bottles and will also be bio-degradable.

Kia unveils Forte LPI Hybrid, first production car to use lithium-polymer battery

Ahead of it’s official unveiling at the Seoul Auto Show, Kia has dropped the curtain on its first ever hybrid, the Forte LPI hybrid. Based on the upcoming Forte compact sedan, the hybrid model makes use of a 1.6-liter engine that runs on liquid petroleum (more commonly known as propane). The Liquefied Petroleum Injected (LPI) engine makes 114hp with an electric motor that adds an additional 20hp for a total of 134hp.

The battery pack in the Forte LPI is a new state-of-the-art product that Kia has developed with parent company Hyundai and LG Chem. This lithium polymer battery (as opposed to the lithium-ion batteries used in most other hybrids) is lighter and smaller and has a higher output than a nickel-metal hydride unit. A new CVT transmission is also a part of the package.

Kia says the Forte LPI hybrid will achieve a combined fuel economy rating of 40.5 mpg - which is says is the equivalent to 50.6 with gasoline (presumably due to the lower cost of propane). Unfortunately LPI or propane isn’t readily available in most markets and so this vehicle isn’t likely to make it to most of the world. The vehicle will, however go on sale in South Korea in August.

While unveiling the car Kia did, however, state that it will bring another full hybrid car to production in 2010, with a hydrogen fuel cell car and plug-in hybrid in 2012. Parent company Hyundai is also planning a hybrid version of the Sonata for 2010.

Hyundai Genesis Coupe outsells Sedan

Traditionally, coupe variants of mainstream sedans sell in much lower numbers than the four-doors on which are they based, but in the case of the new 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe the opposite is true. Sales of the Coupe have been extremely strong, even outpacing that of its sedan sibling despite Hyundai spending less money for advertising.

Currently, Hyundai dealers are only selling the larger 3.8L V6 model as the four-cylinder 2.0L turbo model is still making its way into showrooms. Despite this, Hyundai’s U.S. chief John Krafcik revealed during an interview with MotorTrend that sales have been “smoking” and with the second engine option coming soon we should expect to see more buyers.

The company is unsure, however, whether the more economical 2.0L turbo engine will prove to be more popular than the 3.8L V6, so far more than half of all Genesis Coupe buyers have opted for the 'Grand Touring' trim level - an option that runs from $2,500 to $4,000 extra depending on whether the automatic or manual transmission is chosen.

Rendering: 2011 Hyundai YF Sonata

Hyundai YF Sonata

Thanks to a tip from Graham, we have one of the most accurate renderings of the next-generation Hyundai Sonata, code-named "YF". The upcoming Sonata, set for a release in 2010 as a MY2011, will transform greatly from the current model. It will feature a sleek 4-door coupe-esque style with bold design cues such as an immensely large front grille and a steeply raked front windshield. More details will be released soon.

Thanks for the tip again, Graham!

Editor's Note: To Graham - We'll bet you the front grille will be close in size to the sheer one of the rendering, if not dead on. Judging by the spyshots and the comparable grille found on the Tucson (LM) prototype, at least.

Real-life images of Hyundai Equus

Hyundai Equus
A group of amateur shots of the Hyundai Equus taken recently, and they are concrete proof that the automaker's flagship sedan looks heaps better in person. We are especially attracted to the white model, and the dual integrated Lexus LS460-esque exhausts only ameliorate the stance of the car. The front LED headlights also look lavishing and the hood ornament, while may not meet up well with the majority, evokes luxury.

Follow the jump to view additional images, including ones that show close-ups of the interior. Stay tuned for a group of candid photos taken of the new Equus parked beside a Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

Geneva: Hyundai ix-onic Concept

Hyundai ix-onic ConceptHyundai Motor has officially unveiled the ix-onic Concept at the 79th Salon International de L'Automobile in Geneva today. Acting as the precursor of the next-generation Tucson crossover (LM), the ix-onic Concept was designed by Hyundai's design team in Rüsselsheim, Germany.

The HED-6's design is highlighted by its hexagonal grille, swept back front headlights, and 21-inch alloy wheels. The three-dimensional sculpted rear quarter window is achieved by using high-quality Lexan plastics instead of conventional glass.
The HED-6 Concept is powered by a 1.6L GDi turbocharged engine that produces a hearty 175 horsepower. In the production model, a 2.0L variant of the R-Engine turbodiesel family will debut, which will produce 184 PS.

The redesigned Tucson will make its formal debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show this September, where it will bow as the 'ix35' in the European market.

PRESS RELEASE: 'Urban nomad' ix-onic crossover concept

* Hyundai concept reveals dynamic new look for compact SUVs

* Use of innovative plastics allows novel rear-screen design

* Premium treatment in stylish 'X'-themed interior

* First application of new 1.6-litre GDi turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine - The next-generation, eco-friendly engine emits 149 g/km of CO2

The sensational all-new Hyundai ix-onic concept car, which makes its world premiere at the 79th Salon International de L'Automobile in Geneva, introduces a whole new look for a compact 4x4 SUV.

Assertive, but not aggressive, the ix-onic (pronounced "ik-sonnik") combines dynamic, sculpted, performance-oriented styling with an environmentally-friendly power train and thoughtful everyday utility, to create a vehicle that will change the way consumers and especially younger car buyers think about compact crossover vehicles.

Hyundai's design team in Rüsselsheim, Germany views ix-onic as an 'urban nomad, a car of contrasts for a world of contrasts'. Created in Europe, with European consumers in mind, the new concept is inspired by multi-cultural personalities of cities like Berlin, Paris and London. The ix-onic is tough and compact for life in the city, but sleek and agile for out-of-town travel.

The ix-onic's specially developed, high-contrast exterior paint emphasises its dynamic and flowing lines. Employing an advanced-effect pigment, the innovative paint gives the car's skin a brilliant shine.

With an overall length of 4,400mm, the 1,850mm-wide and 1,650mm-high ix-onic has a great stance and road presence. The design team fused a light, elegant and sporty upper body, with belt lines flowing off both the front and rear wheel arches, to a tough, planted lower body so that the concept is assertive in the way it sits on the road.

Key attributes of Hyundai's 'dynamic sculpture' design philosophy are the athleticism and sophistication that ix-onic demonstrates through its dynamic and flowing lines, full surfaces and muscular presence. This athletic design language is highlighted by bold, dynamic graphic elements such as the hexagonal front grille, the dramatically swept back headlamps, the split belt-line and the third side window kick-up.

LED Daytime Running Lights boost brand identity

The hexagonal grille is a further evolution of the style introduced on the 2006 Genus concept car and developed for its appearance on the i-mode concept in 2008. The headlamps feature innovative LED daytime running lights (DRL) which are becoming an increasingly important element of brand identity. For the innovative ix-onic, part of the DRL moves down whenever 'dipped beam' is switched on, and DRL are also fitted to the door mirror housings.

The profile of ix-onic features a dynamic greenhouse and a sports car-like theme with a muscular, double-zigzag treatment for the wheel arches that wrap around the 21-inch polished alloy wheels. Unusually, the concave sills have a wedge-shaped profile which extends rearwards and wraps around into the rear bumper. The sills and bumper are finished in a contrasting colour, with an aluminium garnish that echoes the aluminium trim in the door handles to enhance the perception of premium quality.

With high-mounted tail lamps, multi-surfaced glass and a sculpted bumper, the rear of ix-onic also incorporates 'dynamic design' elements. The rear lamp clusters feature a grille mesh inspired by the nature, while the rear bumper also neatly incorporates the dual, polished aluminium exhaust tailpipes.

The rear window has been designed and produced by Hyundai in close cooperation with the QarmaQ-partner SABIC Innovative Plastics. Using Lexan high-performance plastics instead of conventional glass enabled the designers to give the rear window a much more three-dimensional shape. On each side of the rear window, two vertical spoilers are integrated to reduce aerodynamic drag. The upper part of the window features a strongly concave shape to make it possible to integrate the roof spoiler in the rear window. Additionally, "Exatec- glazing" was used to incorporate the third stoplight in the upper part of the rear window. Furthermore, a three-dimensional U-shape surrounds the rear wiper to enhance its visual integration into the backlight.

Light and fresh interior seats five in luxurious comfort

Inside, the five-seater ix-onic offers a commanding view of the road and evokes an adventurous ambience that is also laid-back and relaxing. The needs of the driver are fully accommodated, with the interior blending aspects of the outdoors, leisure time and an urban lifestyle.

The first impression of a sporty, light and fresh interior is reinforced on closer inspection by the silky cream-white leather that brings an air of elegance and distinction to the cabin.

An X-shaped visual theme is repeated across numerous areas of the cabin, with embossed leather to accentuate key areas while light-alloy magnesium accents provide flashes of visual brilliance. The sleek shapes of the interior are outlined with 'ice blue' seams that replicate the colour of both the ribbed ice blue floor carpet, which contains a high percentage of natural cashmere wool, and the exterior.

Shapely seats feature centre panels trimmed in breathable fabric with attractive and functional cushion side bolsters, plus additional lateral support for occupants' shoulders – all trimmed in contrasting magnesium grey.

Mounted much higher than usual in the doors, the audio speakers present occupants with a true and highly detailed, top-quality sound reproduction. The interior rear-view mirror has a 'blind spot' warning light that alerts the driver to other road users in close proximity.

All-new power train ensures performance lives up to appearance

Beneath its sensational exterior, the ix-onic's power train is equipped with a 170 PS, 1.6-litre GDi turbocharged, four-cylinder petrol engine, with ISG (Idle Stop & Go) technology and a double-clutch six-speed transmission. Power is transferred to the road by an intelligent four-wheel-drive system fine-tuned to deliver outstanding on-road driving dynamics, together with significant off-road ability. The next-generation, eco-friendly engine emits just 149 g/km of CO2, an impressive figure for an SUV.

PRESS RELEASE: New Kia No 3 concept car stars at Geneva Show

New small MPV concept features evolving 'face of Kia'
cee'd Idle Stop & Go (ISG) lineup and cee'd Hybrid prototype also on display

(SEOUL) March 3, 2009 -- The all-new Kia No 3 Concept Car, which makes its world premiere at the 79th Salon International de l'Auto in Geneva today (Tuesday), redefines the small multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) genre by creating a spacious, functional car that is also beautiful and fun-to-drive. The concept features a unique extended windscreen and panorama glass roof with a diagonal supporting bar, an automatic sun visor and the evolving 'face of Kia' which displays the front grille, head lamps and brand logo in a new constellation.

The 4045 mm long concept, which is finished in matte Titanium Grey with contrasting gloss-white accents, stands out from the crowd with its powerful proportions, dynamic lines, a modern, sophisticated interior and generous cabin space for flexible use. It delivers urban utility with a sporty touch.

The car brings all the features and strengths of a highly versatile MPV into the urban compact class, combining up-to-date mobility with individual style. Kia No 3 excels, in particular, through its unique design language characterized by refreshing clarity and modern, youthful sportiness.

Presenting a concept car of this caliber, Kia Motors Corporation is taking another step in its transition to being a globally oriented, design-focused carmaker. Kia No 3 was created with the European market in mind, by Chief Designer Gregory Guillaume at the Kia Design Centre in Frankfurt (Germany) under the guidance of Kia's Chief Design Officer Peter Schreyer. The concept demonstrates Kia's newly created design language in the treatment of surfaces and the flow of lines as well as the evolving 'face of Kia' which is destined to appear on all future Kia models.

Compact sportiness combined with versatility and spaciousness creates a unique interaction and a truly innovative style in Kia No 3. The new concept car establishes the image of the brand and Kia's new design philosophy that will extend beyond the segment of compact cars. The fresh 'face' of the brand is clearly characterized by the proportions of three crucial elements and the relationship between them – the new radiator grille, extra-large headlights, and brand logo placed precisely on the centre-line, create a new 'constellation' that will also be highlighted on Kia's future models.

Extremely short overhangs accentuate the compact exterior dimensions of the car; powerfully contoured bumpers and large wheel arches as well as extra-large diameter wheels bring out the sporty character of Kia No 3. The concept clearly boasts a dynamic wedge shape characterized in particular by the window graphics and the lines rising up to the rear. The rear light clusters are wrapped distinctly around the side panels.

Nineteen-inch light-alloy wheels running on all-weather high-speed tires, provide a clear hint at the car's sporting performance. The wheel rims, painted black on the outside and finished in glossy chrome on the inside, exude a strong feeling of power.

Kia No 3's long wheelbase (2615 mm) and short overhangs front and rear, together with generous height (1600 mm) and width (1760 mm), provide all the features and qualities typical of an MPV. Extra comfort and space, plus the economic use of the available space are ensured by the ergonomically ideal, slightly elevated seating position. The split rear seats are adjustable independently, with sliding and folding functions.

An extra-large panorama glass roof extends directly out of the windscreen and stretches all the way to the rear spoiler. The result is not only excellent all-round visibility, but also a truly generous feeling of interior space. A diagonally arranged roofbar barely breaks the elegant, seemingly uninterrupted flow of the tinted glass surface.

The highlights of the car's exterior design – modern style, individual character, sporty performance, and unparalleled diversity – also characterize the interior, taking up and repeating the contrast of high-gloss white and black surfaces. Kia No 3 clearly demonstrates the highlights of Kia's future in interior design, with the focus on sophisticated materials, top-quality finish, stylish features, and the most advanced IT technology – all combined with a contemporary lifestyle feeling.

Kia No 3 is the forerunner of a future production model which will combine compact B-segment exterior dimensions with the interior spaciousness and versatility that is more typical of a C-segment car. The concept's name 'Kia No 3' is related to the production car's position in the future Kia model line-up.

Kia at the Geneva Show

For the duration of the Geneva Show (March 5-15), there will be a total of 20 vehicles on the Kia stand [Hall 5, Stand 5231] including three models making their first appearance in Switzerland: the Kia Soul, upgraded 2009 Kia Sportage compact SUV and upgraded, new-look 2009 Kia Magentis sedan (known as 'Optima' in some markets).

Kia is also displaying the new Kia cee'd ISG (Idle Stop & Go) models, which offer up to 15% fuel savings in city driving, and are now on sale in many countries across Europe. Kia's innovative ISG system automatically switches the engine off when the car is stopped in traffic and restarts the engine instantly when the driver wishes to move off. Kia cee'd ISG cars are available with a choice of 1.4-litre and 1.6-litre gasoline engines and each of the three cee'd family bodystyles: five-door hatchback, five-door sporty wagon and three-door pro_cee'd. The 1.4-litre ISG models at Geneva have a 137 g/km CO2 rating.

Kia Motors has produced a fleet of prototype Kia cee'd Hybrid cars especially for testing and evaluation in Europe. The cee'd Hybrid being shown in Geneva uses an upgraded powertrain with Kia's Gamma 1.6-litre gasoline engine, mated to a 15 kW, 105 Nm AC synchronized electric motor, a CVT transmission and the new ISG (Idle Stop & Go) system. Kia calculates that the cee'd Hybrid accelerates to 100 kph in 11.8 seconds and can reach a top speed of 185 kph. The prototype is estimated to achieve fuel consumption of 4.81 liters per 100 km and a CO2 figure of 109 g/km – down 25% compared to the standard 1.6-litre gasoline cee'd.
