Kia Quietly Unveils Refreshed 2011 Sedona, New 271-HP 3.5L V6

Highlights: - New front fascia with corporate "tiger-nose" grille
- New 3.5L V6 engine producing 271 horsepower and 248 lbs. ft of torque
- Mated to a new 6-speed automatic transmission
- Increased fuel-economy (18/25 MPG city/hwy)

Kia Motors America today quietly updated its homepage with the addition of the 2011 Sedona minivan. While the automaker has not published an official press release yet, it is easily apparent that the Sedona is gearing up for the 2011 model-year with a fair list of cosmetic and mechanical changes.

The highlight of exterior updates for the 2011 Sedona is the revamped front fascia, now sporting the corporate "tiger-nose" grille (come on Borrego, complete the unity already!) and blacked-out lower center air intakes. New 16-inch and 17-inch alloy wheels are also part of the exterior changes, as well as LED side mirror repeaters and chrome door/side molding trim.

Again, due to the lack of an official press release, we are only making visual inferences of the interior upgrades for the 2011 Sedona. So far, the single difference we can note from the 2010 model's interior is the new Twilight-escent cool grey wood grain trim accent that bids a so-long-farewell to the gaudy brown of the old.

But wait, there's more. In an esteemed way to stay competitive in the fierce minivan market, with redesigned entries like the 2011 Toyota Sienna, Honda Odyssey, and the upcoming Nissan Quest, Kia has joined in on the festivities by hauling in a new 3.5L Lambda II V6 engine, producing 271 horsepower and 248 lbs. ft of torque. Mated to the powerplant is a new 6-speed automatic transmission, replacing the 2010's 5-speed. Thanks to the new tranny, Kia boasts increased fuel economy of 18/25 est. MPG (city/hwy), reflecting an improvement from 17/23 est. MPG (city/hwy) of the 2010 model.

Pricing of the 2011 Kia Sedona starts at $24,595 (before $795 destination charge) for the LX trim, a $400 increase over the 2010 LX. The up-level EX variant ticks off at $29,195 (before $795 destination charge), reflecting a $500 increase over its 2010 counterpart. Oh and if you cared, the short-wheelbase Base model has been deleted for the 2011 model year. We hardly missed ye.

Report: Kia Cancels Plans for Soul'ster Production

Kia made a big splash at the 2009 North American International Auto Show when it unveiled the funky Soul'ster Concept. Despite its polarizing 2-door open-top SUV design that harks back to the Suzuki X90, the Soul'ster was received very well by the media and public, and rumours surfaced of production intent in the near future. Well, according to Ward's Auto, Kia has now cancelled its plans to build the Soul'ster for production.

In order for Kia to green-light a production Soul’ster, Orth Hedrick, director of product planning, stated “You have to have broader appeal” to justify the development time and money it would take to bring the model to market. He added that a production Soul'ster would be an “almost all-new vehicle,” due to structural and weight differences from the current Soul.

“The business case is really what we have to keep studying all the time,” said Hedrick, noting developing and selling Soul variants would be a challenge, “especially in this environment.”

In the interview conducted by Ward's Auto, Hedrick also stated that the Soul will undergo styling changes to the front and rear, as well as receive more up-level content, for the mid-cycle change in 2012.

FIRSTS FOR HYUNDAI AND CONSUMERS

As Hyundai's flagship rear-wheel-drive sedan, Equus contains many Hyundai firsts. One innovative new technology is the Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) system, which governs ESC, the electronic parking brake, smart cruise control, the collision warning sensor and the seatbelt tensioning system for optimal safety. The seatbelt tensioning system works through sensors, which detect critical driving situations and retract the seatbelts accordingly to prevent passenger movement. The Equus' dynamic safety package is further enhanced by the Lane Departure Warning System and driver's knee airbags.

Beyond safety, the Equus will also debut power rear side-window sunshades, a heated steering wheel, power trunk lid, dual power, heated and cooled front seats, rain-repelling front side windows, a thermoelectric rear console refrigerator, 60/40 split power reclining rear seats and electronically-controlled Air Suspension with dual-mode Continuous Damping Control.

Several new driver information technologies make their debut on the Equus. Driver and passengers can keep an eye on the Equus' numerous electronic systems through the 3.5-inch TFT LCD vehicle information monitor. Equus also features a forward-view cornering camera and a parking guide system with both top view and rear view perspectives.

COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGES

Hyundai's Tau V8, which has been rated one of Ward's "Ten Best Engines" for two consecutive years, is a strong technological building block for Equus. Equus Ultimate adds first-class rear seating and other focused rear compartment features that can only found on low-volume special-order competitive models.

Other safety features include a total of nine standard airbags (advanced dual front airbags, front and rear seat-mounted side-impact airbags, driver knee airbag, and roof-mounted side-curtain airbags), electronic active front head restraints with power controls, electronic seatbelt pretensioners and a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). In addition to these, a Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS) makes its Hyundai debut on the Equus.

Hyundai Gears Up for 3rd Chinese Plant Groundbreaking in September

Hyundai announced on Sunday that it will break ground in September for its third Chinese plant at the Beijing River Industrial Development Zone in Shunyi District. A company executive said, "We have finished final negotiations with the Beijing city government and all that remains is to sign the official agreement."

Beijing Hyundai, a joint venture between Hyundai Motor and Beijing Automotive Group, currently has two plants in Shunyi District that can produce a combined 600,000 vehicles a year. The company aims to sell at least 670,000 cars this year, and demand in China has already surpassed production capacity.

Hyundai had pushed for the third plant since the end of last year, but the negotiations were hindered by the Beijing city government's tough demands, including the transfer of more technology to Beijing Automotive and greater usage of Chinese-made parts.

Hyundai plans to build some 150,000 Avante compacts a year at the new plant from May 2012. According to industry insiders, the company is also considering a plan to produce its new Grandeur sedan (code-named "HG"), which is to be released in Korea late this year, at the plant from late 2012 for sale in the Chinese market.

- 'Drive Change' reflects how Kia is leading change in the automotive
industry through its world class design

- 'Drive Change' also signifies Kia's commitment to impact change by
helping to improve communities in Canada

MISSISSAUGA, ON, July 21 /CNW/ - Kia Canada Inc., a maker of quality vehicles for the young-at-heart announced today the industry-first, 'Drive Change' national marketing campaign. The campaign will focus on the evolution of the Kia brand, showcase its new world class design-led portfolio while reaching out and creating an emotional connection with Canadian consumers through its most recent commitment to social responsibility.

"We have worked very closely with our marketing partners, Innocean Canada and David & Goliath to develop an innovative and compelling campaign. The campaign clearly identifies our new world class automotive design attributes while at the same time reflecting Kia Canada's ongoing commitment to help local communities" said Maria Soklis, Vice President & Chief Operating Officer (COO) Kia Canada Inc. "Drive Change will be the conduit to heightening our brand awareness by reaching out to establish an emotional connection with consumers through both traditional and social media; thus differentiating Kia from other automotive manufacturers."

Kia Canada has invested in an integrated media campaign that involves the production of four television spots, prevalent on-line positioning, strategically placed bill boards, cinema presence, newspaper and magazine.

Kia Canada is also revealing dedicated Facebook (www.facebook.com/kiacanada), Twitter (www.twitter.com/kiadrivechange) and You Tube (www.youtube.com/kiacanada) outlets. These channels document the step-by-step creation of the 'Drive Change' campaign and will serve to provide communication moving forward. This provides Kia with a unique and creative way to reach out to consumers.

The two-initial television spots for 'Drive Change' were captured recently over two, fifteen-hour sessions through time-lapse technology. These spots document life changing improvements for two different groups through the support of volunteers, Kia Canada Inc. employees and the use of Kia vehicles - Soul and Sorento.

The first television spot was captured at the Second Base Youth Shelter in Scarborough, Ontario which underwent a major basketball court restoration for the shelter residents. The court was virtually unplayable. As a result, Kia Canada completely refurbished the court and surrounding area including court surface, basketball nets, player's benches and gardens.

The second television spot was filmed at the Gilder Avenue location of Toronto Community Housing. This location was also in immediate need of a grounds restoration at the complex. Improvements made were the direct result of the resident's feedback and included the implementation of a common green space sitting area, sustainable vegetable gardens and a sectioned-off disposal area with wheel chair access.

Kia is inspiring and propelling change by differentiating themselves from other automotive manufacturers as a dynamic and youthful brand that is community conscious and responsible.

The next phase of brand evolution will witness the launch of the 2011 MY Sportage as well as three additional vehicles over the next twelve months. Toward this end, Kia Motors is implementing a variety of international and local community based programs aimed at developing long-term, economically and culturally sensitive relationships across its global network through universally shared interests such as sports, environmental, health and education issues.

Kia Picanto Tops British Reliability Survey

The Kia Picanto has topped Britain’s most reliable new car survey in consumer magazine Which?. Which? Car, the British equivalent to America's Consumer Reports, has just published its annual reliability survey which is based on Which? members’ feedback. The Picanto, Kia’s oldest car introduced in 2004, was scored highly in reliability amongst cars up to three years old and was one of the top five in the four to eight years old category.

Achieving a reliability score of 98.1%, the Kia Picanto beat off established rivals from Japanese and European brands to take the accolade.

Peter Vicary-Smith, chief executive, Which?, said: “You don’t expect a new car to go wrong – but our rigorous research shows there’s a big difference between the best and worst. Some small cars, particularly Korean and Japanese superminis, run like clockwork. Whereas some bigger cars, which you might expect to be more robust, aren’t all they’re cracked up to be.”

Michael Cole, managing director of Kia Motors UK, said the feedback shows how dependable the car is. “The Picanto has been our best-seller since it was introduced and for it to receive this praise at this stage of its life is confirmation of our efforts to deliver high quality products to our customers at a fair price – something we shall continue to do in the future,” he said.

Hyundai-Kia Beats Toyota in Europe and China

Hyundai-Kia Automotive Group outsold Toyota in Europe in the first half of the year, and has also beaten the Japanese carmaker in China, the world's largest auto market.

According to a report released Wednesday by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, Hyundai's sales jumped 28 percent on-year to 328,000 units in the January to June period, and Kia's 76 percent to 160,000 units.

Their combined sales reached a record high of 488,000 units. If the current trend continues, Hyundai-Kia is likely to achieve its sales target for the year of one million units (Hyundai 670,000 and Kia 330,000) in China.

Toyota outperformed other Japanese carmakers with sales of 362,000 vehicles in China, up 27 percent from the previous year, but it sold 126,000 units less than the Korean automotive group.

Hyundai-Kia has been pulling ahead of Toyota in major global markets except for North America. It sold a combined 329,000 units in Europe in the first six months, 3,000 more than Toyota's 326,000.

All-New 2011 Kia Sportage Priced from $18,990 (USA)

Kia Motors America made a big splash in the streets of San Francisco with the media launch of the all-new 2011 Sportage. The automaker also announced the official pricing of the compact crossover, beginning at $18,295 (plus $695 destination charge) for the base trim. Going on sale later this month, the new Sportage will be available in three trim levels - Base, LX, and the range-topping EX. It is worthy to note that the new starting price reflects a $1,600 increase over the previous 2010 model, but it is perhaps more important to mention the heaps of upgrades added to the new model top to bottom.

The Base trim Sportage offers the usual standard equipment, such as air conditioning, power windows, door locks, mirrors, SIRIUS Satellite Radio, MP3 connectivity, Bluetooth, and 16-inch alloy wheels with low-rolling resistance silica tires. Stepping up to the LX, priced a cool two-grand higher from $20,295, you get power side mirrors with integrated LED indicators and privacy glass. Finally, the $23,295 EX trim packs a stylish set of 18-inch alloy wheels along with roof rails, a rear spoiler, chrome body trim and door handles, dual-zone climate control, and a cooled (and illuminated - ooh) glovebox.

Available options for the 2011 Sportage include navigation with SIRIUS traffic data, rear sonar detector, rear-view back-up camera, leather-trimmed seats, heated front seats, an air-cooled driver’s seat, push button start with Smartkey, heated side mirrors and a panoramic sunroof.

The all-new Sportage comes standard with a 2.4-liter DOHC 16-valve four-cylinder engine with Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT), producing 176 horsepower and achieving 22/31 MPG (city/hwy). A more powerful, yet fuel-efficient 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo GDI engine, projected to achieve over 270 horsepower, will be available in the 2011 model year. The Sportage will be offered with either a front-wheel drive (FWD) or a Dynamax all-wheel drive (AWD) configuration paired to either a six-speed manual transmission (Base) or a six-speed automatic transmission.

PRESS RELEASE: ALL-NEW 2011 KIA SPORTAGE HITS THE STREETS OF SAN FRANCISCO IN STYLE

Compact CUV Continues Kia’s Design-Led Transformation

New design and AWD system for longest-running Kia nameplate
Sportage boasts more refinement, power, fuel efficiency, technology and convenience features than its predecessor

SAN FRANCISCO, July 20, 2010 – The all-new 2011 version of Kia’s venerable Sportage CUV takes its design "Kue" from the concept vehicle of the same name that was shown during the 2007 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit. Completely and beautifully redesigned, Sportage offers more urban and fluid silhouettes than its predecessor while retaining the desirable benefits and functional features of the popular CUV. Sportage also offers increased levels of performance and efficiency, comfort and convenience and the latest in-vehicle technologies incorporated into all of Kia’s latest new vehicles.

"Adding world-class design and cutting-edge technologies to an already successful value-packed CUV equation, the all-new Sportage offers Kia the opportunity to attract an entirely new and more sophisticated customer," said Michael Sprague, vice president marketing & communications, Kia Motors America (KMA). "The 2011 Sportage retains the functionality and versatility of the previous generation model but repackages the CUV into a sleek, modern and bold style with new proportions and a completely new look to help elevate the Kia brand further as a world design leader."

Available later this month, the 2011 Sportage offers image-conscious yet practical consumers more power (176 hp) and improved fuel economy along with the options of a panoramic sunroof, navigation, push-button start, rear camera display, LED daytime running lights and an air-cooled driver’s seat (a compact CUV segment first). However, what first draws attention to the new CUV is the visceral connection drivers make with the striking new design of the all-new Kia Sportage. Also expected to be available in late 2010 is the UVO powered by Microsoft®1 in-vehicle communication and entertainment system based on the Windows Embedded Automotive platform.

"An increasing number of consumers are craving and expecting connected experiences in their vehicles including being able to quickly and directly access music files, change radio stations and make or answer phone calls through voice or touch-activated controls," said Mukund Ghangurde, director of product management for Microsoft’s Windows Embedded business. "It’s exciting to see Kia Motors embrace the power of the Windows Embedded Automotive platform to deliver Kia UVO. We look forward to our continued partnership to deliver connected and engaging in-vehicle experiences for drivers."

Available in three trims – Base, LX and EX – pricing for the dynamic compact CUV will begin at $18,2952 for the base trim, offering standard convenience features, including air conditioning, power windows, door locks and mirrors, SIRIUS® Satellite Radio capabilities with three months complimentary service3, MP3 connectivity and Bluetooth®4 wireless technology. LX will start at $20,295* and will include standard outside mirrors with LED turn signal indicators and privacy glass. Moving up to the EX trim level offers a beginning price of $23,295* with standard features such as 18-inch alloy wheels, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob.

Emotion-Evoking Exterior Design

With a high beltline, sweeping angles and more pronounced wheel flares than its predecessor, the team at Kia’s U.S.-based design center in Irvine, Calif. aimed to convey an even more demanding road presence within Sportage’s compact size by emphasizing its hunkered-down position. The all-new 2011 Sportage projects a modern and clean CUV and greatly expands beyond the current generation’s basic and reliable appeal. The full-sectioned body, defined by a spearing shoulder line throughout the length of the car, helps to visually connect the headlamps and tail lights. The crispness of this line, together with the lowered body, offers a distinct sense of precision while the pronounced C pillar gives a sense of solidity and balance when viewed from the side.

Drawing generously from the distinct styling elements of the Kue concept, the 2011 Sportage’s front end proudly displays the new face of Kia, the brand’s signature grill, with dramatic swept back headlamps, tabbed grill outline and a distinctive lower fascia treatment. The dynamically sculpted hood, framed by a distinctive windshield design, adds to Sportage’s fresh appeal. The rear view offers a clean and contemporary look with pronounced unique tail lights set solidly within the rear lift gate. Longer, wider and lower than the previous model, the all-new CUV successfully retains the key features, including a commanding driving position and of security and powerful road presence, which helped make the second-generation Sportage so popular among consumers.

Starting with the Base trim, Sportage offers numerous standard exterior features, including 16-inch alloy wheels matched with 215/70R16 low-rolling resistance silica tires, body-color door handles, body-color and electrically adjustable side mirrors and a 6-speed manual transmission. The LX adds side mirror LED turn signal indicators, keyless entry, and tinted glass. Moving to the EX trim offers more prominent 18-inch alloy wheels mated with 235/55R18 silica tires, roof rails, a rear spoiler and chrome body trim and door handles. Available later in the model year will be the SX trim, featuring Kia’s all-new efficient and powerful 2.0L turbo GDI engine.

Contemporary and Comfortable Interior Space

Sportage’s sleek aesthetic design from the exterior flows seamlessly into the interior, establishing an inviting and comfortable ambience with well-appointed features and the availability of numerous convenience and technology features. With the signature three-pot instrument cluster set prominently within the dash, Sportage’s interior exudes contemporary design and an upgraded driving experience.

All LX models come standard with a host of convenience features including air conditioning, power windows, 12-volt power outlets in the front and cargo areas, power side mirrors with integrated LED indicators, tilt-adjustable steering wheel, keyless entry with panic alarm and multi-way adjustable front seats. Stylishly appointed cloth seats provide comfortable seating while 60/40 split-folding rear seats effortlessly accommodate driver and passenger cargo needs.

Further increasing the level of refinement, EX models benefit from a leather wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, telescopic steering wheel, illuminated vanity mirrors, automatic folding rear seats, a dual-zone temperature control air-conditioner with ionized filtration, illuminated and cooled glove box, and a power driver’s seat with lumbar support for additional comfort and support. Both trim levels come equipped with an active EcoMinder™ indicator for optimal fuel-efficient driving.

Impressive technology features also come standard throughout, including an AM/FM/CD/MP3/Sat audio system with SIRIUS® Satellite Radio capabilities with three months complimentary service. Also standard on both trims are auxiliary and USB audio input jacks for connecting with MP3 players and Bluetooth® wireless technology connectivity with steering wheel-mounted voice activation controls to enable hands-free operation for compatible mobile phones. The 2011 Sportage also will be among the first Kia models to offer UVO powered by Microsoft®, an advanced hands-free in-car communication and entertainment system (standard on EX models) that enables drivers and passengers to answer and place phone calls, receive and respond to SMS text messages, access music from a variety of media sources and create custom music experiences. HD Radio® also will be made available to enhance listening enjoyment.

Available upgrades for the LX trim include 17-inch alloy wheels paired with 225/60R17 silica tires, navigation with SIRIUS traffic data, rear sonar detector and rear-view back-up camera, heated side mirrors, an air-conditioned and illuminated glove box, telescopic steering wheel, roof rails and a rear spoiler.

Sportage EX models can be further enhanced with available features, including leather-trimmed seats, heated front seats, an air-cooled driver’s seat, push button start with Smartkey, rear sonar detector and rear-view back-up camera, heated side mirrors and a panoramic sunroof.

More Powerful, Fuel-Efficient Engine

The all-new Sportage comes standard with a 2.4-liter DOHC 16-valve four-cylinder engine with Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT), offering more power (176 hp) and better fuel economy (22/31) than the previous 2.7-liter V6 engine. A more powerful but extremely fuel efficient 2.0-liter turbo GDI engine delivers V6-type power with a four-cylinder engine that produces 270-plus horsepower also will be available in the 2011 model year. Offered with either a front-wheel drive (FWD) or a Dynamax™all-wheel drive (AWD) configuration paired to either a six-speed manual transmission (Base) or a six-speed automatic transmission, consumers will have a variety of powertrain combinations to fit their driving needs. The six-speed automatic transmission, first seen on the 2011 Sorento CUV, is a proprietary design for Kia that was designed, engineered and built specifically for Kia vehicles, making the brand one of only three manufacturers to employ such a transmission. All automatics feature Sportmatic® clutchless shifting.

Perfectly suited for on-road driving through the city or on the highway, the FWD configuration offers an efficient package with responsive acceleration, enhanced fuel economy and impressive ride and handling. For drivers who typically face more difficult road and weather conditions, the AWD powertrain provides even more possibilities.

The Sportage’s Dynamax™ AWD system, co-developed by Kia Motors Corporation and Magna International, Inc., continuously monitors driving conditions and anticipates AWD system requirements, compared to other common AWD systems which can only react to conditions after they occur. This offers drivers the benefits of improved lateral stability while cornering as well as the removal of unintended over and under steering by reducing unwanted traction to the front and rear axles. Aimed at achieving increased torque and improved performance on every surface, Dynamax™ offers true AWD for drivers who want an exciting driving experience with enhanced safety and performance.

Sportage’s AWD design delivers 100-percent of engine torque to the front wheels during normal driving conditions, enhancing fuel economy, however when wheel slippage is detected a percentage of the torque is automatically transferred to the rear wheels to help maintain forward momentum. When driving in slippery conditions, such as rain, snow, mud, unpaved roads or off-road, the driver can manually select the "Lock Mode," distributing torque evenly between front and rear axles up to a speed of 25 mph for enhanced stability.

New and Improved Platform

The 2011 Sportage is all-new, including its platform, which has been completely redesigned for the new CUV. With an overall length of 174.8 inches, overall width of 73 inches, wheelbase of 103.9 inches, Sportage is longer, wider and lower than its predecessor, enhancing handling and aerodynamics. Built on a unibody frame, Sportage utilizes independent front-and-rear suspension systems. MacPherson struts are used in the front and have been fine-tuned to improve feel and stability, while new side-load coil springs reduce friction. An all-new, multi-link rear suspension system is used in conjunction with new dampers and coil springs mounted separately to minimize intrusion into the cabin and trunk space and add to Sportage’s handling.

The newly engineered suspension offers the same comfortable ride as the previous generation but also delivers improved handling characteristics with more precise responsiveness to driver input. Both the front and rear suspension systems are mounted on a lightweight hydro-formed subframe, to help isolate the occupants from irregularities in the road surface.

Significantly quieter and more refined than its predecessor due to an aggressive series of NVH reduction measures, the all-new Sportage employs a new bodyshell design with greater use of high tensile strength steel.

Impressive Safety Features

Like all Kia vehicles, the 2011 Sportage is equipped with a long list of standard safety equipment. Both trims come outfitted with driver and passenger advanced front airbags, front seat-mounted side airbags, side curtain airbags and front active headrests, four-wheel Antilock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Stability Control (ESC) Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD), Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) and a Brake Assist System (BAS), which recognizes an emergency stop and delivers significant braking power. Hill Start Assist Control (HAC) and Downhill Brake Control (DBC) also come standard on all models, the former assisting in preventing the vehicle from rolling backward when trying to pull away from an uphill gradient, while the latter locks the vehicle at a slow speed down steep grades so the driver can focus their attention on steering.

To assist drivers when the vehicle is in reverse, an available back-up warning sensor helps the driver avoid contact with certain objects in the vehicle’s path by triggering an audible warning when the vehicle approaches an obstruction, while an available rear-view back-up camera enables drivers to view certain items behind the vehicle.

Competitive Warranty

The 2011 Sportage is covered by Kia’s warranty program, which offers unprecedented consumer protection. Included in this program are a 10-year/100,000-mile limited powertrain warranty, a five-year/60,000-mile limited basic warranty and a five-year/100,000-mile anti-perforation warranty. A five-year/60,000-mile roadside assistance plan also is part of the vehicle coverage.

Hyundai Tops German Quality Report

Hyundai is enjoying an improved reputation in Europe, company officials said, evidenced by its cars topping an annual quality review by influential German magazine, AutoBild.

Hyundai edged better-known firms such as BMW, Toyota and Audi to take the first-place honors in this year's AutoBild Quality Report, which has been released since 2001 and is based on a comprehensive analysis of the quality of vehicles, innovation and the repair and after-sales services of the carmaker. Hyundai finished 11th out of 20 companies on the 2007 list, but elevated itself to fifth in the 2009 rankings.

AutoBild's annual list is based on reviews conducted by more than 9,200 experts and veteran drivers, who tested the vehicles released in the German market by the 20 major carmakers, starting from the 2003 models to the latest.

"For Hyundai to top the quality list in a review by German drivers epitomizes the company's successful efforts to improve the quality of its products and consumer services," said Allan Rushforth, vice president of Hyundai Motor Europe, in a statement released in Korean.

2011 Genesis Coupe

The 2011 Genesis Coupe is a purpose-built rear-wheel drive sport coupe featuring two performance-focused engines – a 210-horsepower, 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and a range-topping all-aluminum, 306-horsepower, DOHC 3.8-liter V6 engine.

GENESIS COUPE HIGHLIGHTS

* 306-horsepower from enhanced 3.8-liter V6 from Genesis sedan
* 210-horsepower turbocharged, intercooled inline four cylinder
* Platform-mate and sinister sibling of the Car of the Year-winning Genesis sedan

Genesis Coupe is Hyundai's most dynamic performance car, appealing directly to the true driving enthusiast. Genesis Coupe uses the same flexible rear-wheel drive architecture developed for the Genesis sport sedan.

POWERTRAINS

Two engines infuse Genesis Coupe with performance. The 3.8-liter Lambda DOHC V6 engine delivers 306-horsepower and 266 lb.-ft. of torque on regular unleaded. This engine will launch the Genesis Coupe from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 5.5 seconds. To maximize the power band, the 3.8-liter engine utilizes DCVVT and a new Variable Intake System (VIS) that helps cylinders breathe more efficiently at both low and high RPM. The better-breathing results in outstanding off-the-line acceleration, passing performance and remarkable fuel efficiency. The V6 engine uses an alloy block and cylinder heads for lighter weight and thermal efficiency and features durable timing chains with no scheduled maintenance.

The turbocharged, intercooled 2.0-liter DOHC inline four-cylinder benefits from Dual CVVT on both the intake and exhaust camshafts. The 2.0-liter turbo generates 210-horsepower and 223 lb.-ft. of torque. It also features a cast-aluminum cylinder block and cylinder head. Both engines feature a free-flowing dual cat-back exhaust and an available Torsen® limited-slip differential to put the power to the ground.

SPORT-TUNED SUSPENSION

Genesis Coupe employs a MacPherson® strut dual-link front suspension and a five-link independent rear suspension setup. The front suspension is mounted to the body via a solid subframe which is lighter and stronger than a multi-piece component would be. To help reduce body roll and tune the Genesis Coupe's at-the-limit handling for maximum predictability, 24-mm diameter front and 19-mm diameter rear stabilizer bars are used.

While all Genesis Coupe models offer a sporty and involving driving experience, the high-performance Genesis Coupe R-Spec and 3.8 Track models are the most willing partners for the true enthusiast. The track-tuned suspension features a stiffer front spring rate, stiffer rear spring rate and unique shock valving. The Genesis Coupe R-Spec and 3.8 Track models deliver a substantial increase in roll control over standard versions of the Genesis Coupe. Superb structural rigidity sets the foundation for precisely-tuned handling performance in all Genesis Coupes.

TRANSMISSIONS

Both engines are mated to a standard six-speed manual transmission. The Genesis Coupe 2.0T offers an optional five-speed automatic with SHIFTRONIC® while the 3.8-liter V6 offers a ZF® six-speed automatic transmission with SHIFTRONIC to handle the additional torque. Both automatic transmissions feature steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

HIGH PERFORMANCE BRAKING SYSTEMS

Brembo four-piston calipers clamp down on 13.4-inch ventilated front brake rotors and 13-inch ventilated rear rotors on R-Spec and 3.8 Track models. All other models get substantial 12.6-inch front ventilated rotors and 12.4-inch rotors in the rear with floating single-piston calipers.

INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGIES

The 2011 Genesis Coupe 3.8 Track offers Xenon high-intensity discharge (HID) headlights. The advantages of HID headlamps include greater lighting power, daylight-type lighting and reduced power consumption.

Music lovers will welcome the 2011 Genesis Coupe's standard auxiliary input jacks (3.5 mm mini-jack and USB input) to accommodate and charge audio devices such as iPods®. There is an optional in-dash navigation unit with a multi-gauge information display screen. This system provides new features including Bluetooth streaming audio capability. This easy-to-use unit can be controlled via 6.5-inch WVGA touchscreen or voice-recognition by headliner-mounted microphone.

SEGMENT-LEADING SAFETY TECHNOLOGIES

In keeping with Hyundai's focus on offering segment-leading standard safety technologies across its lineup, the 2011 Genesis Coupe includes a wide range of both active and passive safety features. Standard safety technologies include driver and front passenger advanced frontal airbags, along with front seat-mounted side airbags, side air curtains and active front head restraints.

All Genesis Coupe models feature standard four-channel ABS with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) to optimize brake performance under various dynamic loading conditions. The system also includes Brake Assist, which provides maximum ABS-level braking force when a panic stop is detected.

Electronic Stability Control (ESC), one of the industry's most effective life-saving technologies, is standard in all Genesis Coupe models.

WEIGHT EFFICIENCY

"One of the program targets for the Genesis engineering team was world-class weight efficiency," Margason said. "When you look at the size and content of both Genesis models, you'll find we lead all our competitors in weight efficiency. We also target leadership in power-to-weight ratio. We think that's just smart strategy in today's world. It pays huge dividends in both performance and fuel economy, and that's especially important in the segments in which these cars compete."

Vehicle Engine Curb Weight (lbs.) Length (inches)
Genesis sedan 3.8-liter V6 3,748 195.9
Genesis sedan 4.6-liter V8 4,012 195.9
Genesis Coupe 2.0-liter turbo 3,294 182.3
Genesis Coupe 3.8-liter V6 3,389 182.3

Both Genesis Coupe and sedan are rich in ultra-high-strength steel, leading to world-class body rigidity. The Genesis sedan is 10-12 percent stiffer in torsion than its Lexus and Mercedes-Benz competitors, yet it is lighter than these benchmark sedans, and offers more interior room. At just 3,294 pounds, the Genesis Coupe 2.0T is hundreds of pounds lighter than all of its IRS-equipped rear-wheel drive competitors, with body-bending rigidity 24 percent higher than the BMW E46 M3.

Curb Weight Power-to-weight
Vehicle Length (inches) (lbs.) Horsepower ratio
Genesis Coupe 3.8 182.3 3389 306 11.1
BMW 335i 181.1 3560 300 11.9
Infiniti G37 183.1 3627 330 11.0
Camaro LS 190.4 3780 304 12.4
Challenger 197.7 3819 250 15.3

This focus on weight efficiency pays dividends across the board. The Genesis sedan owes its ability to deliver both strong performance (0-60 mph in 5.5 seconds) and excellent fuel economy (25 mpg EPA highway rating) in great part due to its impressive weight efficiency. Similarly, the Genesis Coupe 2.0T sets a high fuel efficiency bar with a remarkable 30 mpg estimated EPA highway rating, because of its weight-efficient platform and its efficient 2.0-liter, low-pressure, turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

Hyundai Equus Named a Top 10 Summer Sizzler by Kelley Blue Book

Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com named the 2011 Equus to its Top 10 Summer Sizzlers list, a compilation of all-new early arrivals from the automotive class of 2011.

“With its cutting-edge technologies, bold style and unparalleled combination of luxury and value, Equus will attract a new type of buyer to the Hyundai brand,” said Scott Margason, director of Product Planning, Hyundai Motor America. “Equus will help translate Hyundai’s successful formula for intelligent luxury into the retail and service environment so that owners get a high-end experience at a more affordable price point.”

The Top 10 Summer Sizzlers list profiles the 10 new vehicles that are most likely to excite consumers as the new 2011 model year begins. This summer, automotive manufacturers from around the world have opened one of the most diverse and intensive product launch schedules in their collective history.

“From redesigned longtime success-stories to all-new entrants to the marketplace, many hot 2011 model-year cars are coming through the product pipeline this summer,” said Jack R. Nerad, executive editorial director and executive market analyst for Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com. "It's never been a better time to be in the market for a new car, because auto manufacturers have stepped up their game to offer more choices than ever.”

“A daring move by Hyundai to step up in class, the new Equus sedan seeks to directly confront luxury cruisers like the Lexus LS460 and Mercedes-Benz S-Class,” said kbb.com editors. “Based on a stretched Genesis platform, this high-minded Hyundai matches tasteful exterior styling with a megaload of premium interior appointments. Mechanically, the Equus offers a 385-horsepower/4.6-liter V8, six-speed Shiftronic automatic transmission, variable air suspension and comprehensive vehicle dynamics package.”

Joining the Equus on the kbb.com Summer Sizzler list are the BMW 5 Series Sedan, Cadillac CTS/CTS-V Coupe, Chevrolet Cruze, Ford Fiesta, Honda CR-Z, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Mazda2, Saab 9-5, and Subaru Impreza WRX/STI. Hyundai's Alabama Plant Production Soars

Hyundai's Alabama auto factory set a record for monthly output in June, as workers built 31,500 Sonata sedans and Santa Fe SUVs.

The facility has been on overdrive all year as it tries to keep pace with strong demand for the redesigned 2011 Sonata. Santa Fe sales also are on the rise. Read a story on Sonata sales.

Last month, the plant produced 19,681 Sonatas, along with 11,819 Santa Fes. The total -- 31,500 -- is a 12.5 percent increase from May's output. It also surpasses the last monthly production record of 28,350 vehicles, set in March.

Employees have been working overtime to meet demand for the vehicles built in Montgomery, which are sold across the United States and also exported to Canada, Guam and Puerto Rico.

First Video of New Hyundai Avante On the Road Surfaces the Web

And it's especially apparent here that the redesigned Elantra has grown tremendously in size, to the point where it's virtually indistinguishable from the "larger" Sonata. In this video taken on Hyundai grounds, the depicted prototype is demonstrating a self-parking system that the automaker is currently testing for future products.

Oh and if it serves any importance, the Korean text notes that the video was shot on an iPhone 4. Cheers to the immaculate resolution!

Hyundai i20 Receives Interior Upgrades and Cleaner Engines

The Hyundai i20 is getting blue on the inside and greener under the bonnet. Minor changes to the aerodynamics and engine have resulted in a boost in fuel efficiency for all engines, while the interior is now more stylish and better equipped.

The best-selling 1.2-litre petrol engine, already one of the most efficient in the class, drops its emissions by 5g/km to 119g/km. This results in a tax disc costing just £30 and company car tax benefit-in-kind rates of just 10%. Buyers wanting the extra power of the 1.4-litre version will see even greater savings, with the Style models dropping by 13g/km to just 129g/km. This results in a drop of two Vehicle Excise Duty bands and a 4.3mpg improvement.

The two diesel engines also see significant savings, with the 75PS model dropping by 6g/km to just 110g/km. The 90PS version gains a six-speed gearbox which helps it achieve a 7.2% improvement in fuel economy.

These improvements have been made possible by adding a small spoiler to the underneath of the car to improve airflow around the wheels, fitting an Eco Drive indicator in the instrument panel to suggest the best point to change gear, using low friction engine oil and an alternator management system.

Inside, there are two blue additions. Firstly, the dashboard and instrument illumination is now blue rather than red, bringing the i20 into line with larger Hyundai models. Secondly, Bluetooth phone connectivity with voice recognition is now added as standard on all models except the entry-level Classic.
