Beware Hyundai: Nissan and Toyota entering South Korea by 2009

I immigrated to Canada 7 years ago with my parents from South Korea. During my years in South Korea, I clearly remember that import cars were second to scarce. I would regularly pass by residential parking lots labelled "No Import Cars". Patriotism, perhaps? 7 years later, the scenario is completely different. Import cars are rapidly becoming cheaper and alongside premium makes such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz, mainstream automakers like Honda and Ford have stepped onto the scene. The import plague is likely to continue as by 2009, Toyota and Nissan will be entering the South Korean market as well. In other words, it means the Japanese Big 3 has finally landed on Korean soil.

Nissan Korea has announced its plans to commence sales in the coming October. The initial models at launch are the Altima, Rogue, and Murano. Toyota, the automaker holding the crown in the Land of the Rising Sun, is slated to enter the market by 2009 - with the Camry and RAV4. This seems awfully similar to Honda's initial line-up in South Korea, which consisted of the Accord and CR-V. Both models have seen demanding sales, and the numbers prove that as the Honda CR-V is currently the best selling import car in the country.

This, in the view of consumers, is incredible news. The imminent threat of the strong selling Camry and Altima can possibly equate to lower prices for the Hyundai Sonata. The Sonata still holds the monopoly in the mid-size market, and the high local pricing has sparked criticisms for years. Will this announcement mark the demise of that domestic domination? 7 years ago, that would be a definite no. Today, however, that might as well change.

New York: 2009 Kia Optima

The string of Korean debuts continues in New York with the debut of the 2009 Kia Optima. Making its world debut in the Big Apple yesterday, the Optima receives extensive exterior changes, minor interior revisions, and new engines. The front fascia now incorporates Kia's new corporate look, but we question the existence of the two center bulges on the grille that appeared in earlier spy shots. The rear also receives new taillights that now look more like a cross-bred of the Hyundai Sonata and the pre-facelift Optima. Does it build upon Kia's philosophy of creating dynamic vehicles that evoke passion? We think Kia needs more practice on that, but we certainly believe the 2009 Optima looks more exciting than its predecessor.

The 2009 Optima is also larger, with an increased overall length to 189 inches. The interior also receives a host of new changes including refreshed fascia patterns and color schemes. New barrel-type instrument clusters with red illumination round up the changes inside. New for 2009 is an SX trim that adds a slew of sporty touches onto the EX trim such as sport-tuned suspension, black-bezeled front grille and headlights, LED outside-mirror turning signals, fog lights and hyper-silver-finished 17-inch wheels. The SX also adds black leather-trimmed interior, aluminum trim, metal sport pedals, and Supervision meter cluster. A USB port and SIRIUS satellite radio capability is added for 2009. An in-dash navigation system is also available, new for 2009.

New engines are also in the agenda - a 2.4L four-cylinder 175 horsepower and a 2.7L six-cylinder with 190 horsepower. The former receives a 13-hp boost , which only further defeats the purpose of opting for the underpowered V6. In comparison, a 2008 Honda Accord EX produces 190 horsepower with a 2.4L four-cylinder engine. Every 2009 Optima comes standard with six airbags. However, unlike Hyundai's recent vehicles, Electronic Stability Control (ESC) is not standard. The 2009 Kia Optima is slated to go on sale in early fall of this year. Prices are likely to receive a moderate boost.

PRESS RELEASE: KIA DEBUTS 2009 OPTIMA AT NEW YORK INTERNATIONAL AUTO SHOW

Midsize Sedan Receives Refreshed Styling, New Engine

Redesigned exterior and interior establishes Kia's distinctive, aggressive new look
New engine packs powerful punch without sacrificing fuel economy

NEW YORK, March 20, 2008 – Kia Motors America (KMA) today globally unveiled the 2009 Optima midsize sedan at the New York International Auto Show. On sale in early fall, the refreshed Optima offers a completely modified exterior, which offers a more aggressive, dynamic style than previous models, and is outfitted with a new engine that provides more power and better fuel economy. For 2009, Optima also is larger than its predecessors, which complements its distinctive new styling and separates itself from other vehicles in the growing midsize segment.

"Optima is in a strong position to change the way consumers think about midsize sedan offerings," said Tom Loveless, vice president, sales of KMA. "Already known for its exemplary quality, safety and value, Optima's sleek new redesign provides consumers with a sporty, fuel-efficient choice and showcases Kia's commitment to providing the best all-around vehicle package."

Exterior Excitement

The 2009 Optima is presented with new front, side and rear styling cues, which build upon Kia's philosophy of creating dynamic vehicles that evoke passion. The fog lamps and lower front grille have been enlarged and the headlamps narrowed to create an aggressively sharper look. Wider side garnishes add sportiness while the acute front lines continue toward the back, ending on a distinctly edged trunk lid. To complete the redesigned rear fascia, taillights are narrowed to enhance Optima's sleeker cosmetic appearance.

Also, new for 2009 is the addition of the sporty SX trim, which complements the handsomely-equipped, value-priced LX and luxury-oriented EX trims. Already available with Kia's Rio, Rio5, Spectra and Spectra5 models, the SX line provides another dimension for Optima buyers looking for a sportier midsize. Along with a sport-tuned suspension, SX upgrades include: a black-bezeled front grille and headlamps, LED outside-mirror turning signals, fog lights and hyper-silver-finished 17-inch wheels. EX and LX V6 models are equipped with 16-inch alloy wheels, and are fitted with Goodyear tires.

The 2009 Optima's overall length also increased, extending nearly two inches in the front and one inch in the rear, to an overall length of roughly 189 inches. The larger proportions enhance the exterior styling for a lower, leaner, more powerful stance. All other dimensions, including wheelbase, remain unchanged.

Efficient, Powerful Engine

Available in two powerplants – a 2.4-liter four-cylinder or a 2.7-liter V6 engine – and two five-speed transmissions (manual with LX four-cylinder model only), the 2009 Optima introduces a new engine under its hood. When redesigned as a 2006.5 model, the peppy four-cylinder engine delivered 161 horsepower, a 15-percent increase from the previous generation. For 2009, a more powerful 2.4-liter engine takes its place, producing an additional 13 horsepower. Optima's four-cylinder output increases to 175 horsepower and 169 lb-ft of torque. The available 2.7-liter V6 engine remains a carryover but output has increased to 190 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. The V6 is mated to a five-speed, gated automatic transmission. All automatics feature Sportmatic™ clutchless shifting.

The introductions of Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT) and a Variable Intake System (VIS) further enhance Optima's new under-the-hood excitement. These added systems improve the vehicle's fuel economy without sacrificing power.

Built on a unibody frame, the front-wheel-drive Optima utilizes independent front and rear suspension systems. MacPherson struts are used in the front with a multi-link layout in the rear and are joined with coil springs and anti-roll bars (standard equipment on all models) to engage drivers with responsive handling and provide utmost comfort whether the road is smooth or less than ideal.

Interior Refinement

The style makeover continues into the Optima's cabin with expanded electronics melded with refreshed fascia patterns and color schemes. Based on a new platform, the standard audio system features MP3 compatibility, a USB port and SIRIUS satellite radio capability in addition to an auxiliary jack, which was added to 2008 models. An optional in-dash navigation system also is an Optima first.

The rest of the center fascia and floor console receive minor tuning for even more intuitive operation whereas the new barrel-type instrument cluster design adopts a sporty red illumination. Optima continues to offer two seat trims in gray or beige color schemes – cloth (LX), leather (EX) – with black leather trim on SX models, which also features aluminum trim, metal sport pedals and a Supervision meter cluster.

Amidst the host of additional options, Optima still offers an array of standard features. The LX is equipped with air conditioning, power windows and door locks, an AM/FM/CD audio system with six speakers, cloth seat and door trim, a six-way adjustable driver's seat and four-way adjustable front passenger seat as well as 60/40-split folding rear seats. EX models upgrade to a leather-wrapped steering wheel with tilt and telescopic functions, leather seat and door trim, leather-wrapped shift knob, automatic temperature control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror featuring Homelink® and an eight-way power adjustable driver's seat. Convenience and Premium Packages offer further content upgrades, including a power sunroof and an Infinity® audio system.

Safety-Minded

As with the rest of the Kia line-up, the 2009 Optima is equipped with many safety features as standard equipment. This includes six airbags (dual advanced front and front-seat mounted side as well as full-length side curtain), front active headrests, side-impact door beams, height-adjustable front seatbelts with pre-tensioners and force limiters, three-point seatbelts for all seating positions, Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) and a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). The Electronic Stability Control Package adds Electronic Stability Control (ESC), a Traction Control System (TCS), brake assist and four-wheel anti-lock brakes.

Competitive Warranty

The 2009 Optima is covered by Kia's comprehensive warranty program, which offers unprecedented consumer protection. Included in this program are a 10-year/100,000-mile limited powertrain warranty, a five-year/60,000-mile limited basic warranty and a five-year/100,000-mile anti-perforation warranty. A five-year/60,000-mile roadside assistance plan also is part of the comprehensive vehicle coverage.

New York: 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe

New York brought many acclaimed wonders into the world like the Yankees, CBS, and bagels. And then, came the Genesis Coupe. The 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe made its official debut at the New York International Autoshow today. It seems as if the telephone was a technological marvel when the first spy shots of the car appeared onto the web. Was it worth the wait? Definitely I'd say because the features that the Genesis Coupe sports and the beasts under its hood make it impossible to state otherwise. For one, it is the only car in the market that is rear-wheel drive and can be opted to be propelled by a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. While the tuner enthusiasts celebrate at the back, those who desire more power can button down the 3.8L V6 that boasts (get this) 310 horsepower. Giddy up tuners and consumers because the Genesis Coupe is in town.

Hyundai gave us an official glimpse of the Genesis Coupe at the Los Angeles Auto Show last January, when the Genesis Coupe Concept dazzled the crowds with its attractive design and flashy orange paint. Hyundai boasted that the concept was actually a modified version of the production car. They kept true to their word because the Genesis Coupe has lost little from the concept-to-production transition. The design begins at the front with a fascia that cues the Veloster Concept (see banner). If you squint, fades of Lexus's L-Finesse theme can be spotted. The side profile of the Genesis Coupe features its trademark "Z" pattern and the dipping rear window. The rear is simple, yet in my honest opinion, is the best looking part of the car. Traces of the Infiniti G37 can be detected, but I think the Hyundai edges the aforementioned car by a slight margin. All in all, the exterior is definitely a winner for Hyundai.

The goodness has only begun. Hit the jump to continue reading the article and view the high-resolution images brought to you by Netcarshow.com. The Hyundai PR department's description of the Genesis Coupe is also available after the jump.

[Source: Hyundai]

Hyundai's tradition of bringing a wad of features at an affordable price continues with the Genesis Coupe. The car is available in three trims - GS, GT, and SE. Standard items include Electronic Stability Control (ESC), USB/AUX inputs, Bluetooth, 18-inch alloys, and six airbags. Features standard in higher trims include 19-inch alloys, HID headlamps, climate control, four-piston Brembo brakes, limited slip differential (LSD), and bolstered leather seats. Think the features are enough to end your day with a good one? The goodness hasn't finished here.

Undoubtedly the most anticipated part of the car lies under its hood. It surely doesn't disappoint with the two engines Hyundai has put out for the Genesis Coupe. Standard on the GS and available on the range-topping SE is a 2.0L turbocharged inline-4 that produces 223 horsepower and 217 lb.ft of torque. It lowers to 217 horsepower when running on regular unleaded fuel. However, one who fills up a car propelled by a turbocharged engine with regular unleaded fuel certainly doesn't deserve the cred to drive the car in the first place. Stepping up to the GT or the SE gets you a 3.8L Lambda DOHC V6 that churns an impressive 310 horsepower (306 on regular) and 263 lb.ft of torque. The turbocharged inline-4 is mated to either a 6-speed manual transmission or a 5-speed automatic. The V6 is available with the same manual transmission or a ZF 6-speed automatic.

Thus ends the trilogy of the Hyundai Genesis Coupe. In all three departments, the car is hands-down a winner. I might be comparable to a Hyundai PR guy with all the praises I have stated about the car. However, I seem to not be the only one as the plague has spread across the web like wildfire. Hyundai has announced that the Genesis Coupe's prices will range from a tad under $20,000 for the GS, while a loaded SE will hover in the $30K mark. The Genesis Coupe is slated to go on sale in Korea in July 2008. The U.S. and Canada will get its taste in spring of 2009. Until then, we wait for the ever-awaited comparison test pitting the Genesis Coupe to the Infiniti G37 from the folks at Motor Trend. Will David slay Goliath again? We'll see.

PRESS RELEASE: ALL-NEW HYUNDAI GENESIS COUPE: A NEW BENCHMARK FOR ATTAINABLE 300-HORSEPOWER SPORT COUPES

New York, 03/19/2008

Hyundai unveiled Genesis Coupe, the new benchmark for attainable 300-horsepower sport coupes, during a press conference at the New York International Auto Show today. The 2010 Genesis Coupe is a purpose-built rear-wheel drive sport coupe featuring two performance-focused engines – a 212-horsepower (est.), 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and a range-topping all-aluminum, 306-horsepower (est.), DOHC 3.8-liter V6 engine. Genesis Coupe is scheduled to join the Hyundai lineup in the spring of 2009.

GENESIS COUPE HIGHLIGHTS
• Hyundai’s second rear-wheel drive performance car
• 306 horsepower (est.)from enhanced 3.8-liter V6 from Genesis sedan
• Std. 212 horsepower (est.) turbocharged, intercooled inline four cylinder
• Genesis Coupe arrives in the spring of 2009 as a 2010 model

Following the introduction earlier this year of the rear-wheel drive Genesis sport sedan, Genesis Coupe is Hyundai’s most dynamic performance car ever and the second consecutive all-new model introduction from Hyundai appealing directly to the car enthusiast. Genesis Coupe uses the same flexible rear-wheel drive architecture originally developed for the Genesis sport sedan.

“We think our entry-level Genesis Coupe 2.0t, with its unique combination of rear-wheel drive and four-cylinder turbo power, offers an intriguing alternative to existing front-wheel drive sport coupes,” said John Krafcik, vice president, product development and strategic planning, Hyundai Motor America. “The 3.8-liter version of Genesis Coupe takes driving to an even higher level, rivaling the capability of premium-performance coupes like the Infiniti G37.”

DESIGN PROCESS

2010 Genesis Coupe Genesis Coupe was shown as a concept at the 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show and its transformation from concept to production reveals that its signature design features have emerged intact.

“The mission for Genesis Coupe was to create a pure performance car with a design that would capture the imagination of hardcore automotive enthusiasts,” said Joel Piaskowski, chief designer at the Hyundai Design Center in Irvine, Calif. “With its aggressive look from just about any angle, I think we have been able to do that.”

Genesis Coupe is also unmistakably linked to several Hyundai concept cars. The powerful curves, undulating beltline, surface detail, and “Z” bodyside lines come straight from the HCD9 Talus and the HCD8 sport coupe concepts.

Designers used the Day Light Opening (DLO -- a designer's term for the side glass) from the 2006 HCD9 Talus Concept on the Genesis Coupe. The 2004 HCD8 sport tourer concept’s sensual body forms influenced the overall design direction of Genesis Coupe.

Genesis Coupe’s arching roofline and tapering greenhouse highlight the exterior profile and emphasize the car’s broad shoulders and wide stance. The Genesis Coupe’s rocker panels are drawn close to the ground making the bodysides extra thick and the daylight opening thin, allowing the wheels to be slammed up into bulging fenders. To complete the aggressive sports car look, the depth between the fenders and the greenhouse has been maximized.

Large openings in the front fascia allow for better engine breathing. The dual exhaust tips integrated into the rear fascia with surrounding blackout repeat the design theme of the front fascia graphic.

Genesis Coupe rides on standard 18-inch alloy wheels or optional 19-inch wheels, both delivering a bold stance and aggressive handling.

INTERIOR DESIGN

In keeping with its mission to be the most exciting, attainable sport coupe on the road, the Genesis Coupe boasts a cockpit designed to enhance the driving experience. An information display screen features an outside temperature reading and audio system information. Analog gauges include a large speedometer and tachometer positioned so the driver can immediately access critical driving information. The instrument cluster features Hyundai’s signature blue gauge illumination.

Bucket front seats with large side bolsters offer excellent lateral support for enthusiastic driving. High-quality seating surfaces range from full black fabric on the Genesis Coupe GS and GT, to optional full black or brown leather on the GT, to red cloth inserts with black leather bolsters on the SE.

Among the other refinements are an Infinity audio system and two-stage front seat warmers. Genesis Coupe also offers the convenience of a Smart Key and push-button starter.

REAR-WHEEL-DRIVE ARCHITECTURE

Genesis Coupe’s body shell is rich in ultra-high-tensile steel. Genesis Coupe is lighter than the Infiniti G37, and its chassis is also 24 percent stiffer in bending rigidity than the BMW E46 M3. Rear-wheel drive provides a 55:45 front/rear weight distribution.

POWERTRAINS

Two engines infuse Genesis Coupe with performance. The 3.8-liter Lambda DOHC V6 engine delivers an estimated 306 horsepower (310 horsepower using premium fuel) and 263 lb.-ft. of torque on regular unleaded. This engine will launch the Genesis Coupe from 0 to 60 miles per hour in under six seconds. To maximize the power band, the 3.8-liter engine utilizes Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT) on intake cam shafts and a new Variable Intake System (VIS) that helps cylinders breathe efficiently at both low and high RPM. The better breathing results in outstanding off-the-line acceleration and passing performance, and remarkable fuel efficiency. The V6 engine uses an alloy block and cylinder heads for lighter weight and thermal efficiency, and features timing chains with no scheduled maintenance.

The turbocharged, intercooled 2.0-liter DOHC inline four-cylinder benefits from CVVT on both the intake and exhaust camshafts. The 2.0-liter turbo generates an estimated 212 horsepower (223 horsepower using premium fuel) and 217 lb.-ft. of torque. It also features a cast-aluminum cylinder block and cylinder head. Both engines feature a free flowing dual cat-back exhaust and an available limited slip differential to put the power to the ground.

SPORT-TUNED SUSPENSION

Genesis Coupe employs a MacPherson strut dual-link front suspension and a five-link rear suspension setup. The front suspension is mounted to the body via a solid subframe which is lighter and stronger than a multi-piece component would be. To help reduce body roll and tune the Genesis Coupe’s at-the-limit handling for maximum predictability, 23-mm diameter front and 18-mm diameter rear stabilizer bars are used.

While all Genesis Coupe models offer a fun and sporty driving experience, the high-performance Genesis Coupe SE is a most willing partner for the true enthusiast. The SE’s track-tuned sport suspension features a stiffer front spring rate, stiffer rear spring rate and unique shock valving. Genesis Coupe SE delivers an increase in roll control over the GS. Superb structural rigidity sets the foundation for precisely-tuned handling performance in all Genesis Coupes.

STEERING

Hydraulic rack-and-pinion steering with a quick ratio gear delivers both linearity and agility. The steering is also engine-RPM sensing.

TRANSMISSIONS

Both engines are mated to a standard six-speed manual transmission. The Genesis Coupe 2.0t offers an optional five-speed automatic with SHIFTRONIC® while the 3.8-liter V6 offers a ZF six-speed automatic transmission with SHIFTRONIC to handle the additional torque.

Drivers can access the SHIFTRONIC® feature by moving the gear selector into a separate gate. Pushing the selector forward or pulling it rearward will shift the transmission up or down sequentially, adding to driver control. A clear LCD readout on the instrument panel shows the gear that’s in use.

HIGH PERFORMANCE BRAKING SYSTEMS

Brembo four-piston calipers clamp down on 13.4-inch front brake rotors and 13-inch rear rotors on SE models. All other models get substantial 12.6-inch front ventilated rotors and 12.4-inch rotors in the rear with floating single piston calipers.

INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGIES

The 2010 Genesis Coupe offers Xenon high-intensity discharge (HID) headlights. The advantages of HID headlamps include greater lighting power, daylight-type lighting and reduced power consumption. In addition, the cut lines of the new HID headlights are extremely precise, providing maximum nighttime visibility without distracting other drivers.

Music lovers will welcome the 2010 Genesis Coupe’s standard auxiliary input jacks (3.5 mm mini-jack and USB input) to accommodate and charge audio devices such as iPods®. When an iPod or flash drive is connected through the USB port, located in the center storage compartment, not only does it play music through the vehicle’s audio system, but it also charges the iPod and allows the driver to access tracks with the steering wheel audio controls. This system also allows both driver and passengers to easily view song/artist/title information and control the music from the audio head unit rather than only the iPod itself.

SEGMENT-LEADING SAFETY TECHNOLOGIES

In keeping with Hyundai’s focus on offering segment-leading standard safety technologies across its lineup, the 2010 Genesis Coupe includes a wide range of both active and passive safety features. Standard safety technology includes driver and front passenger advanced frontal airbags, along with front seat-mounted side airbags, side air curtains and active front head restraints.

Genesis Coupe has strong unibody construction, along with front and rear crumple zones, bodyside reinforcements, and five-mph energy-absorbing bumpers. The hood also includes buckling creases and safety stops.

The front seatbelts have pretensioners and force limiters, and the rear seats feature LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children), which make affixing child safety seats easier.

All Genesis Coupe models feature standard four-channel ABS with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) to optimize brake performance under various dynamic loading conditions. The system also includes Brake Assist, which provides maximum ABS-level braking force when a panic stop is detected.

Electronic Stability Control (ESC), one of the industry’s most effective life-saving technologies, is standard in all Genesis Coupes. Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) studies suggest vehicles equipped with ESC experience 56 percent fewer fatalities in single-vehicle crashes.

THREE DISTINCT TRIM LEVELS

The Genesis Coupe is offered in three trim levels: the stylish and affordable GS, the premium-sport GT featuring the 3.8-liter V6, and the high-performance SE, available with either the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine or the 3.8-liter V6 engine.

China: Hyundai vows to improve image, confirms luxury brand

For those who plead Hyundai to introduce a luxury brand for countless years, the wish has been granted - that is, if you reside in China. As a chiefly move to improve the image of the brand in the country, Hyundai will launch a premium brand as early as 2010.

"We are refurbishing our brand image in China," says Young-Key Koo, chief representative of Hyundai Motor China for sales and marketing.

Launching a high-end automaker is more than difficult when the words "economical" and "affordable" dominate the minds of consumers in China regarding the brand. Hyundai's strong sellers in China are the Elantra and Sonata. The two models are also widely used in taxi fleets across the country, with the former being the second most popular next to the Volkswagen Santana. In an effort to improve the brand image, Hyundai will remove a few of its low-priced models - the most significant being the Matrix. In turn, Hyundai will launch the Rohens (Genesis in other markets) in April. The Genesis Coupe will replace the Coupe in October with a higher price tag. A refreshed Santa Fe and Azera will also debut in China for 2009.

[Source: China Daily via Gasgoo.com]

Article continued after the jump

Hyundai also plans to introduce a luxury model more expensive than the Rohens - this one packing a larger 4.8L V8. A crossover is also scheduled to be released. Hyundai vows to continuously bring out premium cars to reinforce its brand image. 2010 is the year Hyundai is slated to launch its luxury brand, along the lines of Acura, Lexus, and Infiniti.

Immediate efforts to ameliorate the brand's perception have commenced already. The company's advertising budget was increased 60 percent in 2007. The number of dealerships in the country have grown from 23 to 42. Since September of 2007, Hyundai has vowed to recuperate on the 4 S's - sales, service, spare parts and survey stores. Plans to renovate its dealerships into more upscale environments have undergone.

Hyundai is gaining territory in one of the largest markets for the automaker. But, what about us folks in North America? Speculations point to the introduction of the premium-oriented brand in our continent as well. It is only a matter of Hyundai whipping up official word on that. And, if you haven't noticed, Hyundai has already showed signs of image improvement on our shores despite the monotonous sales numbers. How about those monotonous sales numbers? Well, Hyundai has plans to release more models throughout the decade and as you know, each redesign released by them seem to only improve upon its predecessors. That already, ipso facto, is a sign that points Hyundai to a brighter outlook in the years to come.

Speculation: 2009 Kia Optima

In an earlier post, we revealed the first images of an undisguised prototype of the refreshed 2009 Kia Optima. The front fascia was the most striking change of all, as the soft curves of the current model have been booted for sleeker and sharper lines that Schreyer has become fond of. We have seen a similar change undergoing in the Spectra department.

From the undisguised images we posted, a Kia enthusiast put his flawless skills in photoshopping into work to render how the car will shape up. The result was, I daresay, astounding. I am 99% positive the rendering is spot on to the actual car, and the new fascia improves the look of the car substantially. Props to the person who whipped up this one.

TCB Exclusive: 2009 Kia Spectra (TD) information

The slew of news tips and informations we get from our readers is undoubtedly the backbone of our posts. Last time, GreyhoundBoy87 sent us the first undisguised shots of the revised Kia Optima. This time, an avid reader of TCB named Gabriel Joo sent us an e-mail containing exclusive information of the next-generation Kia Spectra. This information is sourced from numerous testimonials from a private focus-group of the TD, which occurred in September of 2007.

The exterior is to take a major departure from the present designs in the line-up. Out are the bland and round shapes that make up the current Spectra and in comes sleeker lines in every corner of the car. The front fascia is to resemble the current JDM Honda Civic. The rear is often compared to the Lexus IS250's, but many state that it's a sharpened interpretation of the current Hyundai Elantra. At least in the domestic versions, the TD is to be available with push-start button, intelligent key, and a BMW-esque sharkfin antenna. Another option is a rear-view camera that appears on the rear-view mirror.

The domestic models will be available in three powertrain configurations; a 1.6L 4-cylinder that boasts 34MPG (14.4km/L), 2.0L Beta 4-cylinder, and a turbocharged 2.0L Beta 4 producing 180 horsepower. The North American models are to be also available with a 2.4L Theta 4-cylinder producing around 160~175 horsepower. The availability of the turbocharged 2.0L for the Korean market has been recently confirmed by a Chosun article. The TD is to be priced approximately 400 000 Won ($408 USD) higher than an equivalently-optioned Hyundai Elantra.

Other than the information above, details are mum as to how the new Spectra will materialize. Reports indicate the possible canning of the Spectra5, in favor of a 2-door coupe targeting the Honda Civic Coupe. Kia will give us a glimpse at the upcoming New York International Autoshow this month, when the automaker will be unveiling a preview concept of the TD.

Spied: 2009 Kia Optima (Facelift)

Didn't I mention that Kia was on an ever-growing roll recently? GreyhoundBoy87 sent me the first shots of the upcoming refreshed Optima undisguised today, and the first impression is mighty good. The Optima, known as the Magentis or the Lotze in other markets, was released as a MY2006.5 model. The facelift imaged here will be the car's first substantial refresh and will debut as a MY2009 model in Korea first.

The slew of changes include a heavily reworked exterior, a retouched interior, new gauges, and new powertrains. The exterior receives the most attention with a redesigned front fascia that cues the Kue Concept and KND-4 Concept. New taillights and wheels are also in the roundup. The interior undergoes minor revisions to the center stack, gauges, and electronics. An in-dash navigation system will also be available in the US and Canadian market. There are no details regarding the available engines of the car. However, we suspect that both 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder models will receive a moderate boost.

Other than the shots we have obtained here, details are slim as to how the revised Optima will shape up. We cannot speculate accurately on when the Optima will make its debut, but we'll put our bets onto the Seoul Motor Show coming this April. If not, chances are high that Kia's updated mid-size sedan will bow at the Paris Motor Show this September.

Seven Kia models given Best Bet by The Car Book 2008

Kia has been on a roll recently around the world with record sales posted in various markets, namely Europe and the US. Partial credit can be given to the automaker's award shelf, which has seen a surge lately with accolades from various publications. Today, Kia has announced that 7 of their models have been given "Best Bet" distinctions by The Car Book 2008. The Optima, Rio, Rondo, Sedona, Sorento, Spectra, and Spectra5 were given the honors by gaining sufficient ratings in multiple categories including crash test results and fuel economy.

We are pleased to have several of Kia’s top-selling models distinguished as "Best Bets" by The Car Book," said Byung Mo Ahn, group president and CEO of KMA and Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia (KMMG). "As we continue to raise our brand profile, we are proud to receive these awards based on safety features and performance characteristics in our vehicles." A noteworthy mention goes out to the Rio and Optima, which have received the honors for a third consecutive year. The Spectra and Spectra5 were also recipients of the accolade last year.

The future for Kia has never been any brighter. The Borrego, recently launched at the Detroit Autoshow, has already earned praises in its home market despite its untimely launch. Dealer executives from the US also had the same viewpoint of the vehicle, meaning that the Ford Explorer is up for some serious competition in the coming months. The Optima is in line to receive a substantial refresh, and spyshots suggest that the front fascia will cue the Kue Concept. The redesigned Spectra (TD) is slated to bow in showrooms early next year.

Geneva: Kia Soul Concepts (Burner/Diva/Searcher) w/VIDEO

Before Kia guns the official release of the production Soul, the automaker decided to unveil a trio of concepts that give us broader hints on the upcoming car at the Geneva Motor Show. At the 2006 North American International Autoshow, Kia took the wraps off the Soul Concept which was the first iteration of the design. The trio of concepts, named Burner, Diva, and Searcher, shrug off some of the exaggerated design elements found on the Soul Concept that will remain intact in concept form.

Headed by Kia's Chief Design Officer Peter Schreyer, the Soul Concepts unveiled at Geneva are trailblazers to the automaker's response to the popular Scion xB sold in the US. The Soul arrives at a time where "boxy" seems to be the new black and other automakers have responded. Nissan has confirmed the release of the coveted Cube and Honda has released the Element in 2003. Out of the Soul Concept triplets, the naked eye can tell that the Soul Burner is the sporty one of the three. The Soul Diva is targeted towards women who care greatly for their Coach handbags and Tiffany's necklaces like how men care for their automobiles. The Soul Searcher is the adventurous one of the trio with subtle, rugged touches on the exterior.

The production Soul (AM) will be unveiled officially at the Paris Motor Show this September. Sales will proceed in early 2009 across Europe, South Korea, and North America. International sales will follow later.

GM Korea launches Cadillac BLS

GM Korea has released plans to commence sales of the re-engineered 2008 Cadillac BLS in the Korean market as early as tomorrow. The premium sports sedan is Cadillac's smallest offering in the current Cadillac line-up, and it targets the would-be BMW 3-Series and Mercedes C-Class consumers.

The BLS made its first unveiling at the 2005 Geneva Motor Show and its Korean premiere in October 2006. The BLS was initially available only as a gasoline model. The 2008 BLS benefits from new changes including the introduction of a diesel counterpart. The BLS 2.0T has upped its ante with a new 2.0L turbo, which produces 25 more horsepower over its predecessor to an impressive 175. The BLS 1.9TiD benefits from a 1.9L 150 horsepower turbodiesel engine. The 2.0T is mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission while the 1.9TiD is equipped with a 6-speed manumatic.

Carrying Cadillac's traditional torch of bountiful features, the BLS comes equipped with bi-xenon headlamps, LED taillights, premium BOSE audio system, 4-channel StabiliTrak system, and is available with a DVD touch-screen infotainment system with navigation. Both models wear 17-inch alloy wheels. The 2.0T gasoline trim will be priced at 41 million Won ($43 189USD) and the 1.9TiD diesel trim will sticker at 42.5 million Won ($44 769USD). And no, the BLS will not arrive in the US; at least not anytime soon. However, I direct you to your local Saturn-Saab-Isuzu dealer where a brand-spanking new Saab 9-3 is waiting. For those who don't get the jist, the BLS is a heavily rebadged Saab 9-3. Thank the guys who formerly built jets for this beauty.

Kia Rondo named Best Value by Edmunds.com

The 2008 Kia Rondo was named a “Best Value” by Parents Magazine and Edmunds.com in their annual list of Best Family Cars. Parents cited the optional third row, allowing seating for seven, as just one of the reasons the Rondo is a good choice for families.

“The best thing about Parents Magazine’s recognition is that real parents who drive Rondos everyday with their families are the ones who recognized Rondo for its safety features, great value and amenities,” said Byung Mo Ahn, group president and CEO of Kia Motors America and Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia (KMMG).

In addition to the third row and the price, Parents listed the hidden storage under the cargo area, split-folding rear seats and the front and rear power outlets, which kids love for plugging in DVD players and MP3 players, as additional benefits of the Rondo. One parent surveyed noted that her family of five was quite comfortable during a round-trip from Indiana to Colorado and noted “the pick-up is nice, and I find it easier to install car seats in it than in any vehicle I’ve ever driven.”

Parents Magazine and Edmunds.com list cover a range of sizes, styles and price points. The vehicles chosen share a commitment to safety, ranking at or near the top in government and industry crash tests and all offer cutting-edge technology to protect its passengers. Winners must have a strong track record for reliability and performance. Real parents who own the models were asked to judge their vehicle on factors like storage space, ease of car-seat installation and handling.
